Jay-Z Becomes Fanatics Star to Secure Mobile Sports Betting License in New York

The rap icon and founder of Roc Nation was recently announced as vice president of the group, after an investment of 325 million dollars, which values the merchandising company at 18 billion. Jay-Z will be responsible for advising on the strategic and creative direction of the sports merchandising giant, as well as helping to expand the global reach of Fanatics, a sports betting company.

Last week, the company’s founder, Michael Rubin, outlined plans to expand into businesses beyond sports merchandising with funds he had recently acquired to enter betting, media and ticketing. Former FanDuel CEO Matt King will lead Fanatics’ sports betting.

On the company’s change, Rubin commented:

“We’ve realized that we have this incredible opportunity… from truly moving from a leading e-commerce company to building a leading digital sports platform. Which means that as a sports fan, Fanatics offers you any sports product that is important to you.”

New York is set to open early next year and is expected to be incredibly lucrative. Today, the city only allows sports betting in four non-tribal casinos. Fanatics will face stiff competition as it joins a handful of companies that submitted bids this month to operate mobile sports betting, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Bally’s, BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook.
