An Irish lawmaker introduces a law that would ban the use of credit cards for online and land-based betting in the country

By banning the use of credit cards, the Gambling (Prohibition of the Use of Credit Cards) Act 2021 aims to revise the Gambling Act 1931 to promote responsible gambling. Thomas Gould, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on addiction, rehabilitation and welfare, presented it.

Under the original legislation, people applying for a license must agree not to accept bets placed by credit card and the bill will make the requirement mandatory. The use of e-wallets will also be prohibited unless the payment provider can demonstrate that there are options to avoid the use of credit cards.

After three months, people with valid permits will be subject to the new credit card restrictions. Violations could lead to a fine of up to two years in jail.

“I’m very proud of this legislation that will ban credit cards from online gambling and in stores,” Gould said.

“Protecting vulnerable people has to be the most important thing in the regulation of gambling. Although the government has not yet published a gambling control project, Sinn Féin is committed to introducing credible protections that help protect vulnerable people.”

In August, it was announced that Irish bookmakers would ban the use of credit cards for betting, as well as advertising before sports matches start.

“We have to make sure that those who are in the midst of addiction don’t gamble with money that they don’t have and can’t afford,” Gould added.

“I call on all parties and independents to support the cause and ensure that we truly protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
