Ireland: Flutter Entertainment increases safer gambling measures

Flutter Entertainment has imposed new regulations and measures in a bid to improve safer gambling in Ireland

Flutter Entertainment, who have major brands under their umbrella such as PaddyPower, Betfair, Sky betting & gaming, have upgraded their policies in responsible gaming to reduce potential harm.

There is a significant push to promote safer gambling from Flutter as they have committed 1% of their net gaming revenue (NGR) to support any research, education and treatment of problem gambling.

This should amount to €1.25m in 2021, and €3m by 2023.

The updated policies will include:

  • Ban on credit card usage for online and retail accounts
  • Restrict advertising during live sports

The Entertainment brand’s Paddy Power, Betfair and Skybet will all stop accepting credit card payments while advertisement restrictions will be implemented as from 1st May.

These new measures will help improve the already implemented rules in relation to problem gambling, utilising AI and human monitoring to identify potential harmful behaviour.

Flutter UK & Ireland CEO, Conor Grant, highlights that in today’s society gambling accessibility has transformed:

Conor Grant Flutter CEOWe recognise that gambling has undergone a technological transformation over the past two decades. The influence of the smartphone, social media, and on-demand streaming has been profound.

We have not always got it right as an industry and we must ensure collectively that we are doing all we can to prevent problem gambling.

The reality is that protection and promotion measures will continue to evolve over time and new measures will need to be considered to promote moderation, safety and enjoyment in this era of digital gambling.

Flutter has increased safer gambling guidelines on all marketing channels, established Safer Gambling Week in Ireland, while developing robust policies and governance structures to implement high safe gambling standards.
