Jay-Z is lending his star power as Fanatics seeks to obtain a mobile sports betting license in New York

The rap icon and founder of Roc Nation recently announced his appointment as the group’s vice president. The company received an investment of $325 million and was valued at a market capitalization of $18 billion. In his new role, Jay-Z will advise the sports merchandising giant on its strategic and creative direction and help expand the overall reach of Fanatics’ sportsbook.

Last week, the company’s founder, Michael Rubin, announced plans to use the money from his recent acquisition to expand into businesses beyond sporting goods, including betting, media and ticket sales. Matt King, former CEO of FanDuel, will run Fanatics Sportsbook.

Commenting on the company’s recent shift, Rubin said:

“We don’t have 、… We realized that there was an amazing opportunity to really move from a leading e-commerce e company to building a state-of-the-art digital sports platform. This means that sports fans can go to Fanatics and get the sports products that matter to them.”

New York’s New York mobile sports betting market is set to open early next year and is expected to be incredibly profitable. Currently, the city of San Francisco only allows sports betting at four non-tribal casinos, but enthusiasts will face stiff competition, as will the few companies that bid this month to operate mobile sportsbooks, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Bally’s, BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook.
