A new TV programme highlights Malta’s iGaming success

Written by Caro Vallejo

Malta has firmly established itself as a global hub for iGaming, playing a crucial role in the local economy. According to reports from the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), this sector accounts for around 12-13% of the country’s GDP, with a direct economic contribution of €1.34 billion in 2023 and the creation of over 16,000 jobs, making up 5.2% of Malta’s workforce. The key to its success lies in a favourable regulatory framework led by the MGA, which has ensured high ethical and technological standards since 2001. In addition, the country’s strategic location has attracted both startups and industry giants.

Bringing iGaming to Malta screens

Amid Malta’s growing prominence as a global iGaming hub, SiGMA News spoke with two experts who are bringing this phenomenon to traditional media through a TV programme: ” L-Industrija tal-Gaming f’Malta”. Fernando Mercieca (pictured right in the featured image), an experienced accountant and producer with over 14 years in television, contributes his creative and strategic vision to bring the project to life. Meanwhile, Glenn Debattista (pictured left in the featured image), COO of BetStarters and with two decades of experience in the iGaming sector, shares his insights into market trends and challenges, bridging the digital industry with the power of traditional media.

Could you share the inspiring story behind this TV programme about iGaming awareness in Malta with SiGMA News? We’d love to hear why traditional media was chosen as the perfect platform for this initiative.
Fernando and I used to work together at an iGaming company some time ago, and we have remained good friends. He is also an established name on local television in Malta, working on different projects, such as Hazzard and Buckle Up. Last year, he told me that he wanted to produce a new programme, and I suggested doing one in the iGaming sector since there were none of them.
He liked the idea, and we started working on the 13-episode format of almost 30 minutes per episode and how to pitch it to TVM. Then, as they say, the rest is history, with the show debuting Monday, 7th April at 6:30 pm on TVM+ with repeats on TVM and TVM+ almost daily.
