UNLV In collaboration with iGaming Academy launches a new training program: ElevateRG
ElevateRG is an online training program that will take responsible gaming training to the next level ElevateRG is the new training program that UNLV’s International Gaming Institute (IGI) and iGaming Academy have created in collaboration and will bring UNLV’s flagship responsible gaming curriculum online for the first time.  IGI, world-renowned as the “global intellectual capital of gaming” is launching ElevateRG an online training program that will take its responsible gaming training to the next level.   The new ElevateRG training program will bring IGI’s world-renowned responsible gaming (RG) training to gaming industry staff and learners across the US and worldwide. The first course, now available, is fully interactive, providing a uniquely engaging learning experience that can be accessed from any location.   What makes this training unique?   The development of the ElevateRG, online training program has been overseen by UNLV’s Jennifer Shatley, a highly-respected RG leader with 25 years’ career experience, notably with Caesars Entertainment.  “What sets our RG training apart is how operationally-focused it is,” explains Shatley. “Gaming staff deserve better than just a brief overview of the risks. Our training demonstrates the practical actions that gaming staff can take within their roles to proactively promote responsible gaming to minimize gambling-related harm.”   ElevateRG is designed to prepare staff and equip learners with both the broad knowledge and the practical experience required to tackle real-life situations that may arise over the course of their day-to-day working practices.  In addition to RG, UNLV and iGaming Academy plan to launch a full range of vocational and industry-specific training courses to help address the current unprecedented demand for staff resources across the US industry, covering land-based, online sportsbooks, and other gaming categories.  Convenience and accessibility   “For land-based casinos, IGI has long represented the ‘gold standard’ in RG training – and now it’s easier than ever to supply for staff,” said Jaime Debono, iGaming Academy’s Managing Director.   “As the online industry continues to expand, operators will benefit from having access to best-in-class training in an online format that’s easy to include within their onboarding and refresher programmes.”  Customers of the iGaming Academy will be able to access the new ElevateRG training, either individually or hosted within a client-branded learning portal provided by iGaming Academy.   The courses can also be imported into a wide range of third-party learning platforms or incorporated as an extension to existing training programs.   Scalable to all levels of experience  The ElevateRG training program will be available in a new online format and will include numerous courses designed to cover responsible gaming across all levels, from a comprehensive introduction for front-line staff to managers and leadership versions. Refresher training variants will also be available.   Senior staff will soon also be able to achieve IGI’s prestigious Ambassador Certification as part of a blended program that combines both online and classroom-based learning.   Why do you need this training?  Regulatory scrutiny on online operators is widely expected to increase as the market grows. It will be increasingly important for operators to demonstrate a commitment to responsible gaming, provable via strong training programs with recognized certification.   “With the specificity, convenience, and scalability of this training well ahead of anything available in the market, this truly is a ‘game-changer’ for responsible gaming training in the US,” said Debono.  About iGaming Academy iGaming Academy is part of The Conexus Group and has established itself as a worldwide leader in  training for Casinos, Sportsbooks and Lotteries. With over 50,000 learners being trained yearly, and clients including major European and US operators and providers. In Canada, the business operates in partnership with the Canadian Gaming Association, to help ensure regulatory compliance and upskill staff.  For more information, please visit igacademy.com/USA/  UNLV International Gaming Institute (IGI) has provided research-based solutions, cutting-edge insights, and executive education to the gaming industry for more than 25 years. 10 best US states for sports betting
Which states rank the highest when it comes to sports betting handles? Will Nevada, home to Las Vegas, take top spot? Sports betting has taken the US by storm. Back in 2018, a few states such as Delaware, Mississippi and Nevada legalised sports betting but 2020 really saw the betting vertical take off. One of the main reasons was due to the unexpected COVID-19 virus which had a massive impact on several states' economies. To counter this economic downturn many states turned to sports and online betting as a new source of revenue. This decision proved successful with many states recording huge handles and revenues. Playtika cuts 15% of staff, CEO to take a pay reduction
Playtika Holdings said it will cut 15 percent of its global staff and close down three projects to position the Israel-based gaming company for the future. At the same time, CEO Robert Antokol requested a cut in his base salary next year and for 2024 to the minimum level under Israeli law. The board’s remuneration committeee accepted the proposal, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Antokol gave news of the job cuts in an email to employees, filed with the SEC.  “The news I share with you today is difficult,” he wrote. “After intense deliberation, we have decided to reduce our workforce by about 15 percent, saying goodbye to wonderful and talented colleagues and friends. This decision has not come easy, yet we think it necessary to best position Playtika for the future.” Antokol said the company will wind down non-core initiatives and consolidate studios for greater efficiency. It will also centralise the evaluation of new game concepts through its creative team at Wooga. Three current titles have been removed from the pipeline, it said.  In total just over 600 staff have been affected by the cuts.  For 3Q22, the company posted revenue of $647.8 million, just slightly higher than the $635.9 million reported the prior year.  Adjusted EBITDA fell to $230.7 million, down from $247.8 million the prior year.  Last month, Playtika announced it would buy a $25 million minority stake in Turkey’s Ace Games as part of a strategy to invest in high-growth potential games in a cost-effective way.

ESPN reportedly close to major partnership with DraftKings
Walt Disney’s ESPN unit is reportedly close to signing a major partnership with DraftKings to take advantage of the expanding U.S. sports betting market. Bloomberg reported news of the tie-up, citing people familiar with the matter, but had no further details on the structure of the deal.  Disney CEO Bob Chapek said last month that the sports network was looking for a partner, but said that it would never be a sportsbook that accepts bets. Chapek told analysts on an August call that the company has been in conversations for “quite a long time” with sportsbook platforms. Since sports betting was legalized in the U.S. in 2018, media companies have raced to reach agreements with gambling firms and sports leagues. Boosting engagement A report from consultancy KPMG found that the addition of legalized betting increases viewer interest in live sports programming by expanding the audience and driving greater retention during events. Sports fans with a wager may watch for longer, even if the outcome of a game has largely been decided and casual fans tune out. KPMG put the size of the combined sports, betting and media market at $135 billion in 2021 and said that firms completed 18 deals in the first half of that year, matching the total for the whole of 2019. ESPN has lagged many of its rivals in tying up with sports betting brand, mainly due to Disney's concern over protecting its family friendly brand credentials. A tie-up between the two companies “makes strategic sense,” the news agency reported, citing Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Brian Egger and Geetha Ranganathan. “Licensing EPSN’s brand to a sports book and integrating bet odds in broadcasts could help both companies widen their audiences.” THE 300 SPARTANS: After triumphing in key locations across Asia and Europe, AGS is flying 300 top affiliates to Malta, for an all inclusive deluxe trip. Today's conference focussed on iGaming developments happening across the United States and in Canada. Top industry leaders discussed topics such as responsible gaming, working with gaming affiliates, brand building in the iGaming space, working with tribal operators, and the new competitive and regulated iGaming market coming to this interior.

Topics covered:

  • The transition to iGaming
  • Responsible Gaming for Online Gaming
  • New Jersey: Operators and Affiliates
  • Brand Building for iGaming Operators
  • Working with tribal operators in the U.S
  • Canada: A new competitive and Regulated iGaming market
[caption id="attachment_163849" align="alignleft" width="400"]the transition to igaming SiGMA Americas Virtual Panel: The transition to iGaming.[/caption]

In the opening keynote, Ali Bartlett, Vice President of Government Relations, Bose Public Affairs Group spoke about the growth of iGaming in the United States following the rise of sports betting.

Bartlett notes the major milestone that was marked when sports betting became legalised in each of the states - as these states saw mobile and online operations become reality, responsible gaming initiatives started to constantly grow. Geolocation at work, age, and identity verification processes have also proved to be successful. This has created a level of comfort with legislators looking to expand into the iGaming world.

Industry partnerships and multi-state partnerships will also see a lot of opportunities as more states are moving online. Bartlett says that there could be different types of gaming coming to life as more and more opportunities are arising for various operators in the industry with ideas becoming legalised on a state-by-state basis.

"The more advancement we see in these spaces the more the industry will grow and innovate, but they're also going to provide new revenue opportunities for states. They’re going to allow for changes to the industry landscapes and partnerships we see."

She closes off by saying that online gaming will benefit the industry as a whole, not just the online industry, as it will also create new opportunities for brick and mortar casinos and bring a new style of player that they haven't seen before.

SiGMA Americas Virtual Summit Panel:
Responsible Gaming for Online Gaming.[/caption]

Another hot topic tabled by leading academics, during the summit was that of Responsible gaming. Casinos, gaming control boards, operators (such as casinos), and vendors all have social responsibility initiatives in place to maintain the integrity and fairness of their operations and to raise public awareness of gambling-related problems, such as gambling addiction.

In this panel, Stewart Groumoutis, Director eGaming of BCLC; Elizabeth Lanza Office of Compulsive and Problem Gambling of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, Laura Mcallister Cox, Chief Compliance Officer at Rush Street Interactive and Seth Palansky, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility & Communications Conscious Gaming take on this topic to discuss it further.

Lanza says that since you can gamble from anywhere, so you should be able to self exclude from anywhere. Having a tool like Play Pause can empower the consumer, in their journey in this world of addiction. It will be difficult, but times are changing and we have to adapt quickly - most other regulators and operators would like to move forward on a nationwide self-exclusion program, especially in the iGaming world.

[caption id="attachment_163829" align="alignleft" width="534"]new jersey SiGMA Americas Virtual Summit Panel:
New Jersey: Operators and Affiliates.[/caption]

Cox also believes in giving patrons choices. Clear choices determining how they utilise these tools is important, and right now, with multiple exclusion lists, it’s confusing for the player. "How can we make that experience for that player who wants to do something affirmative, more clear and easier to pursue?"

"Sports betting patrons skew male and younger. We also have an iGaming platform and we’re live in a number of states - and we see the tendency there is more 50-50 with females, and of an older age demographic. So, we’re seeing a broad base of the population entertaining themselves with our platform - but when they need that reach out, whatever is comfortable for that person should be an option."

Cox states that individuals can change quickly, adapt, and find new, better ways to use technology to address a situation that wasn't anticipated.

"We need consistency on what data is being gathered, on the time frames that are being offered to players for self-exclusion, consistency on limits, on when and how the player comes off self-exclusion. The idea of a central system for online gambling throughout the US is a tempting concept."

Groumoutis says that having a single view of a customer allows you to recognise gambling behaviours, such as problem gambling.

One of the things we recognise, when people are gambling in their home is that we have no idea of their environment, their current state - and on top of that people could be going through a challenging situation and feeling very lonely, this can be an extremly problematic situation.

[caption id="attachment_163819" align="alignright" width="473"]brand building for igaming operators SiGMA Americas Virtual Summit interview: Brand Building for iGaming Operators.[/caption]

"Over the past year during the pandemic, we implemented our game sense advisors, which are player health trained onto play now - which is our online platform. You have to make sure people have the support they need, it’s not just a program of check boxes and making sure you lock them out of whatever gambling they want to be locked out of - it’s what happens after that as well. How do you support the monitoring? When the VSC expires, what are you doing to help them re enter safely and in a healthy fashion?"

What followed was a panel solely addressing the focus on New Jersey's operators and affiliates. Benjamin Truman, COO of Media Troopers stated that coming from the European market for many years and then coming into America, you don’t experience the same regulation, the paperwork, or dealing with the American mentality and people.

Getting licences here can be very tedious "it’s not an external decision whether you get a licence or not, but whether or not that state has made it very, very difficult. A lot of states are requesting fingerprints, information that goes well beyond what most affiliates would probably feel comfortable with."

He goes on to say that SEO companies are finding it difficult in the US as the market is still not 100% mature - it’s going to take time. Growth is there if you’re willing to stick it out.

[caption id="attachment_163809" align="alignleft" width="456"]working with tribal operators in the us SiGMA Americas Virtual Summit Panel: Working with tribal operators in the U.S.[/caption]

George Alafoginis Global Gaming at Facebook stresses the fact that their role in this growing industry has since 2018, been to open up their business tools, and in this case, it’s also to make the same ads that are available for other verticals, available to operators and affiliates.

Samir Bannerjee Director of Marketing at Golden Nugget Online Gaming goes on to say that the pioneers of the affiliate marketing space in the online gaming fields have always been here, they’ve grown tremendously over the past 6 or 7 years, but that doesn't mean there's no room for new companies coming out of Europe and the US or even people changing industries. "Lately I've noticed affiliates in the US who were in the healthcare and finance space slowly moving into the iGaming space - mostly with a focus on the sports betting side of the business."

Brand building for iGaming operators was addressed in detail in the next panel. Here Nic Sulsky, COO of PointsBet Canada said that "when you’re trying to build a brand in the hyper-competitive gaming space, you really need to figure out what your key differentiator is - is it a product or is it brand?" Expanding on this the speaker stated that ideally, it’s a mixture of both.

[caption id="attachment_163799" align="alignright" width="475"]canada new competitive SiGMA Americas Virtual Summit Panel:Canada: A new competitive and Regulated iGaming market.[/caption]

In the next panel, speakers debated working with Tribal Operators in the US. Rebecca George Executive Director of Washington Indian Gaming Association opens up by saying that the state and the tribes in the Americas are named as co-regulators, the tribe as the primary regulator and the state co-regulator, this a unique relationship. The other thing that IGRA laid out was that the profit from the government gaming must benefit the tribal government.

Marcus Yoder, Senior Vice President of Sales at GAN said "We’re right in line with self-determination and the ability to control that data and really maintain the players, so I think if you’re coming into the US you need to have that understanding."

Russell WITT, Director of Central Determinate Gaming at Incredible Technologies also goes on to say that when you truly get to understand and work with tribes you really start to see what it’s all about. The companies that take the time to understand will be the successful companies. "The companies that want to come in and be transactional they’ll crash and burn."

"Knowledge plus trust equals empowerment. If you get someone who really understands these markets from that standpoint, that is really going to be part of your key to success."

The last panel named Canada: A new competitive and Regulated iGaming market was regulated by Victor Bigio an Online Gaming Consultant
for the Americas. The speakers Dave Roe, Chief Operations Officer at Mazooma, Aly Lalani, Head of Marketing at BetRegal.com and Nei Erlick Chief Corporate Development Officer at Nuvei discuss all things Canada.

Neil Erlick opens up about what companies wanting to do business in Ontario or partnering with operators in Canada. He says that "Most of the names here are not startups so most of them have experience in working in the regulated markets. I think they're used to the challenges. If someone is looking at this as a challenge it's because they haven't done this before."

This is all relatively new. Canada needs to have an educational process to see how this will work and this is what operators are focusing on at the moment says Lalani.

When it comes to benefits Roe talks about where he and other payment companies stand when it comes to this. "From a payment provider perspective, more operators in the market obviously create more competition."

A huge number of operators are entering the market in Canada in anticipation of the incoming regulations. Speakers agree that the licening itself creates a trust factor.

Downturn in US futures on fears over China chip restrictions
In early trading today, Nasdaq futures led the market decline following a report in The Wall Street Journal indicating that the Biden administration is contemplating a ban on the sale of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China. This potential ban has caused a setback in the recent market rally. According to Deutsche Bank, the rebound has been curtailed due to concerns over the AI chip ban. The report suggests that even lower-end chips, which do not require an external export license, may be included in the ban going forward. As a result, shares of Nvidia, which generates 20 percent of its revenue from China, fell by 4.8 percent while Advanced Micro Devices dropped 3.6 percent. S&P 500 recoups nearly 50 percent Investors are also closely monitoring the European Central Bank (ECB) forum in Portugal, where Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, is set to speak alongside the heads of the UK, eurozone, and Japanese central banks. The market will pay particular attention to any comments regarding the prospects of higher borrowing costs as central banks continue to grapple with persistent inflationary pressures. Despite these concerns, market research firm Fundstrat believes that recent market trends indicate further gains. The rebound seen on Tuesday, which brought the S&P 500 back to multi-day highs, is viewed as a positive development that halted the recent decline. Fundstrat noted that the S&P 500 managed to recoup nearly 50 percent of its previous pullback since mid-June highs, suggesting a potentially bullish outlook. Europe and Nikkei indexes rise Overseas indexes mostly rose, with Europe's Stoxx 600 gaining 0.5 percent and the Nikkei 225 in Asia rising by 2 percent. However, Chinese stocks were more subdued as fears of US AI chip restrictions dampened sentiment. The Shanghai Composite Index remained flat, while the Hang Seng edged up by 0.1 percent. In pre-market trading, AeroVironment's stock rose by 5.2 percent after the company reported a better-than-expected 40 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenue and issued guidance for the current fiscal year that surpassed Wall Street expectations. On the other hand, AST SpaceMobile's shares fell by 24 percent following the announcement of a sale of 12 million class A common shares. Micron Technology stock declines by 1.5% Micron Technology, scheduled to report quarterly earnings after the closing bell today, saw a decline of 1.5 percent in its stock price. Other chip makers, including Intel and Qualcomm, also traded lower. In other news, the US Food and Drug Administration rejected an application from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for approval of a new, higher-dose version of its eye disease treatment Eylea, resulting in a 1 percent decline in the company's stock. Looking ahead, Astrotech received an unsolicited, non-binding proposal from BML Investment Partners to acquire the company for $17.25 per share, leading to a 7.7 percent increase in its shares. Dollar strengthens On the economic front, JPMorgan expects the second half of 2023 to see a continuation of tightening policies by most developed market central banks. However, differentiation across jurisdictions will emerge as the end of the tightening cycle approaches. The bank believes that resilient growth and persistent inflation will prevent an imminent recession. In the currency markets, the dollar strengthened slightly, building on its gains from the previous day following a set of stronger-than-expected economic data. UBS said that the dollar is "significantly overvalued" against several other relevant currencies but expects it to weaken in the coming months.   Related content: SiGMA Group launches new FX vertical Did you know that the SiGMA Forex Summit takes place in Cyprus in September?

Overcoming identity verification in Brazilian gaming sector: Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk speaks to SiGMA News
Taking a closer look at the challenges in Brazil's gaming sector, SiGMA News speaks with Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk, a specialist in digital identify verification. One of the most common problems faced by gamers in Brazil, and indeed in most new emerging markets, is the lack of access to official identification documents. The very prospect for any player to have to worry about how to overcome this challenge reduces the overall gaming experience. They want to participate in recreational activities in total comfort without having to face any hassle or hurdles before they start the game. Leisure time is valuable and the average gamer today is more sophisticated with high expectations. In such a competitive market, where players want to optimize their gaming experience, operators need to invest in cutting-edge technology that eases the identity verification process. Operators need to ensure that new players are who they say they are before allowing them to open and finance an account. Identity verification also entails ensuring that current gamers are authentic and, more importantly, of the appropriate legal age. Keeping the needs of the end-user experience in mind, it is critical that online gaming ID verification makes smart use of data to minimize a negative customer experience. Barrier to gaming inclusion Many people in Brazil do not have access to official identification documents such as ID cards, passports or a driver's licence, explains Redfearn-Tyrzyk. This creates a barrier to gaming inclusion because banks and financial institutions require official identification to open an account for a player.
Without a state-issued identification document, people will have a hard time verifying their identify be it offline or online. The same challenge applies to gaming operators - to verify a player's age and make sure that they are not in any way politically exposed persons, documentation is nearly always needed," Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk - Vice President, Global Gaming - IDnow
Redfearn-Tyrzyk believes that it is vital for both operators and players to feel safe. The popularity of online betting in the LatAm region is on the rise. "Responsible gaming is all about prevention and it is important," Redfearn-Tyrzyk points out. "Players want to enjoy themselves, but sometimes things can go too far, or individuals may take advantage of the system. Regulations are getting tighter and easing the process of identification is a step in the right direction." Responsible gaming a priority Protecting minors from underage gambling is a priority. The same applies to vulnerable and marginalised groups. It is known that historically there is a higher rate of problem gambling and addiction from historically marginalised groups when compared to white individuals. Among adolescents, gender-diverse students are more likely to engage in problematic gambling behaviour than their cisgender counterparts. Identification verification solutions are designed to make people's lives easier and safer, even serving as a deterrent of wrongdoing with harmful consequences. When it comes to the downsides of regulation says Redfearn-Tyrzyk,  the biggest problem is that there are different ways to interpret certain rules or requirements. "Unfortunately, there are many frustrating examples of regulations, which may have four or five different interpretations of the same paragraph. This does not do anyone any good because there will always be bad players and unscrupulous operators who want to grow quickly by exploiting these grey zones. Overall, I would say regulation is absolutely necessary, but it is hard to find well-executed regulation." Potential of Brazilian gambling market Redfearn-Tyrzyk has studied the potential of the Brazilian gambling market and he has identified a range of available opportunities that are still untapped. With a population of over 210 million, the people of Brazil are known for their passion of sports, leisure activities and gaming. It is estimated that the overall gaming market is worth over US $6 billion and sports betting is the largest segment. Presently, the market is not regulated. The Brazilian government announced that its 2018 gaming  reforms and regulations will be implemented by the second half of 2023. The new regime will regulate Brazilian sports betting with new licensing requirements. With the upcoming regulation for online gambling, the market is expected to grow even more significantly. With the growth of this sector in the region brings  a need for players to be protected so that their money is secure. Gaming operators who are seeking to offer compliant products in Brazil under the new regulation will be required to verify the identity of players before accessing the platform. This process is the Know your Customer (KYC) requirement. Redfearn-Tyrzyk says that KYC not only enables an age verification of players but when a financial relationship is established, authorities will also have access to collect personal data and are able to monitor fraud or other money laundering activities. With the verification from the Brazilian Cadatro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF), a unique identification number for each user is created and all bets that are associated with the player can easily be identified. Operators must ensure players are not politically exposed persons (PEPs) or part of any other restricted list that is associated with criminal money laundering activities. Sports betting is not only growing in Brazil but it is also increasing in popularity in  Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru, in particular says Redfearn-Tyrzyk.  "I expect this trend to increase even further as more and more people gain access to online sportsbooks and betting apps on their phones. The regulatory landscape in the LatAm region is quite mixed. Bolivia and Nicaragua, for example, cover online gambling in their overall regulatory framework for the gambling industry. In Argentina, on the other hand, online gambling is regulated on a province-by-province basis. Chile’s Ministry of Finance introduced a bill to regulate online gambling in March of last year, while Ecuador currently prohibits all forms of gambling." Influx of new operators in a regulated market "We are certainly expecting an influx of new operators in Brazil acquiring a licence in the new jurisdiction, following the new regulation" says Redfearn-Tyrzyk. Operators who wish to be properly established in Brazil will have to comply to all licensing requirements, including the KYC mandate. "I think a regulated market in Brazil will have a very positive impact in the LatAm region. A country legalizing and regulating sports betting is good for all players because they get protected whilst that would not be the case on a black-market site. Protecting players from black-market sites is absolutely crucial. Plus, I am certain Brazil will profit from the tax income and will be able to invest this money in to contribute to a safe gambling environment for communities across the country." LatAm countries will follow Brazil's lead Other Latin American countries like Chile are already moving towards regulating online services. However, if Brazil’s regulatory scheme proves to be effective and beneficial for the country, I can see other LatAm countries follow Brazil’s lead.
Solutions are available on our KYC platform of agent-assisted to fully automated solutions including PEP screening for the iGaming sector that deliver the requirements obliged under AML laws. We have one of the broadest identity verification portfolios in Europe with fully automated and hybrid solutions. For example, the AI-based solution helps businesses prove the authenticity of their customers through their identity documents in just a few minutes, making the digital onboarding process scalable, secure and highly assured. Biometric verification techniques, including live video checks, offer a more reliable way of confirming someone's identity, reducing the risk of fraud and errors. Our solution can be integrated with government databases to verify identities, including those without official documents." Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk - Vice President, Global Gaming - IDnow
Identification verification techniques will allow both operators and users to navigate responsibly thus ensuring that the industry thrives and has a sustainable future ahead. “As Brazil and other Latin American countries move towards regulating online services, it is crucial to ensure that solutions are inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their access to technology and documentation,” Redfearn-Tyrzyk added. Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk is Vice President of  Global Gaming at IDnow. He is a recognised industry expert in digital identity verification and European gambling regulations.
