Alan Feldman, Distinguished Fellow and Director of Scientific Initiatives at the University of Las Vegas International Gaming (UNLV), spoke with SiGMA in Barcelona and offered valuable insights drawn from his expertise in the gaming industry. He highlighted the current trends shaping the sector and explored the potential of emerging markets on a global scale. His in-depth understanding of the industry provided a comprehensive overview of how these developments could influence the future of gaming worldwide.
Feldman has set Las Vegas as an example of how to present gambling in a positive light, contrasting with the typical negative image associated with the industry. Las Vegas emphasises the entertainment, social, and economic benefits of iGaming, showcasing its potential in a more favourable context.
He discussed the importance of understanding each market around the world, noting how it has transformed over the past 20 years. What was once primarily a gambling sector has now expanded to include non-gambling activities such as entertainment, sports, retail, shopping, and dining. He emphasised that these added amenities do not negatively impact the gambling industry but instead gather more interest from consumers.
While Las Vegas has a rich influence in land-based activities, Feldman explained how the city is also making significant strides in the online sector by offering new experiences to players.
Feldman expressed, “I think what’s lacking is a broader understanding of the impacts of this.” When asked whether society can be educated to view iGaming as a form of entertainment rather than a controversial issue, he argued that the industry can provide more benefits than just monetary gains and loss, which is often the only perspective people consider.
Feldman stressed the importance of looking beyond the glimmering facade of substantial earnings in the iGaming industry. He pointed out that this sector is not just a profit-driven enterprise. It serves as a crucial support system for the government and the countless individuals striving to provide for their families and communities. By bringing this reality to lawmakers’ attention, he believes that they can foster a more harmonious and mutually beneficial environment for the industry, ultimately leading to greater stability and growth for everyone involved.
“There are moments where adults wanted to be adults, and that was a little bit of what the UAE lacked,” Feldman expressed his fascination with the emerging gaming industry in the UAE. He emphasised that this development is very important for the region, and given its strong governance, he is eager to see what further successes the area will achieve in the future.
