American companies ready for Canadian sports betting

There’s a new country in play when it comes to licenced and regulated sports betting and the leading American sports betting powerhouses are already crowding the start line, ready to bring their brand into the Great White North

The Senate of Canada gave the stamp of approval to Bill C-218 on Tuesday, June 22nd. Also known as the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, it is a Private Member’s bill that was introduced into the House of Commons by Conservative Kevin Waugh, a Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Grasswood.

The bill amends paragraph 207(4)(b) of the Criminal Code to make it lawful for the government of a province, or a person or entity licensed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council of that province, to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in the province that involves betting on a race – other than a horse race – or fight, or on a single sport event or athletic contest. By logging in at MyTopSportsbooks.com, Canadians are able to access their available betting options. Canada currently offers parlay wagering that is run through each Canadian province’s lottery corporation. The expectation is that as single sports betting begins, it will also be regulated and licenced by these provincial lottery organizations, similar to how the American system has operated since sports betting was legalized across the country in 2018. In the USA, each state governs all sports betting taking place within its state lines.

Online and mobile sports betting options will also be offered.

Tremendous Pro Sports Backing

Right from the outset, the leaders of the major pro sports leagues have thrown their considerable power around in support of Bill C-218. A little over a year ago, the commissioners of five of the major sports leagues that have franchises in Canada – the NHL’s Gary Bettman, the NBA’s Adam Silver, MLB’s Rob Manfred, the CFL’s Ambrose, and Don Garber of the MLS signed and sent a joint statement to several key members of government.

‘The National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, and the Canadian Football League support an amendment to Canada’s federal laws that would authorize provinces to offer betting on single sporting events,’ the statement read.

‘Sports betting gives fans another exciting way to engage with the sports they love. Because a legal and regulated sports betting market in Canada would be beneficial to sports and their fans, we urge prompt action to make this a reality.”

American Betting Houses Ready To Move In

While the Canada-US border may remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that isn’t stopping the leading online and mobile betting sites in the legal US market from wanting to do a little cross-border shopping in an effort to increase the scope of their empires.

The top sites are casting a wanting eye as they look to expand their brands into Canada. For theScore Bet, which operates a mobile sports betting app in Colorado, Indiana and New Jersey, this will be a homecoming. TheScore began life as a Canadian sports media company and are confident that they can leverage this factor to make them a major player in the Canadian sports betting market.

TheScore’s sports app is among the most popular in Canada. It lists over 4 million users, of which 1.4 million are based in Ontario, the most densely populated Canadian province. TheScore is confident that they can convert many of those users over to their sports betting app.

It’s a similar formula to the approach utilized by DraftKings in the US market. Already a dominant presence in the daily fantasy sports business, DraftKings transitioned into a sports betting site when legalization occurred in the USA in 2018. The company was able to get many of its DFS clients to also become sports betting customers and DraftKings is now an online and mobile sports betting powerhouse in the country.

Canadians already play DFS through DraftKings, so it’s likely many of them can be convinced to try sports betting with the company.

Draft kings‘DraftKings has been part of the Canadian sports culture for many years and, through legalized sports betting, the company has another opportunity to further change the way fans in the country engage with their favourite teams, players and leagues,’ DraftKings Vice-President of Government Affairs Griffin Finan said in a statement.
