Ash Wednesday sees former Trump Plaza and Casino turn to dust

Atlantic City sets 17th February as blow up date for former Trump Plaza and Casino

On Friday 22nd, Atlantic city leaders revealed the demolition date for the former Trump Plaza and Casino built by former president, Donald Trump. The casino will be imploded on February 17th.

Trump Plaza closed permanently on 16th September 2014. This was the fourth casino to close in Atlantic city in 2014 and has sat vacant since. The closure left approximately 1,300 employees out of work. The closure will ceremonially mark the end of Trump’s casino career.

Carl IcahnIn 2016, the property was purchased by Carl Icahn (seen left), a billionaire casino investor. Icahn was never able to formulate a solvent plan to see the property come back to life. The investor also owns Trump Taj Mahal where in 2016 he sold it for $50 million to Hard Rock International. Trump Plaza on the other hand, never found a suitable buyer.

Last December the Democratic mayor declared an auction for the chance to hit the implosion button on the casino.

“We have another auction that looks like it’s going to take place and that should materialise later today or tomorrow, but it looks like we’re going to be selling a viewing party,” said Joe Bodnar, the company’s owner, in a phone interview on Wednesday.

“You get to come and be a guest of the city and watch the implosion as close as you can.” The charity bidding process for a front-row seat to watch the demolition of Trump-Plaza was called off because of safety reasons and instead Icahn told The Associated Press, that his philanthropic arm will be donating $175,000.

“The implosion is symbolic to a start of a new beginning for the future of Atlantic City, and this will be a part of history, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Bodnar stated.
