Australian casinos forced to lockdown once again
The Star Sydney ceases operations and pays staff for 2-week period amid the outbreak of Delta Covid-19 Variant
Australian officials declared the first full-city two-week lockdown for all of greater Sydney and the regions surrounding the nation’s largest city since the pandemic began on Saturday, as the country is grappling with several outbreaks of the highly contagious Delta variant.
Following the New South Wales government imposing a stay-at-home order, The Star Entertainment Group had shut its Sydney property for seven days. An extension to two weeks came within these days. The Star said that it will continue to pay staff through the recent 14-day covid-19 lockdown which is expected to stay in place until at least July 9, 2021.
“The stay-at-home orders follow the introduction of the one person per four m² rule, the mandatory wearing of masks, and the implementation of the ‘no drinking while standing’ rule pursuant to public health orders made on June 23, 2021.”
While The Star Entertainment Group’s Queensland properties remain open, The Star Gold Coast and Treasury Brisbane, the establishments must oblige to the aforementioned restrictions.
Australia had seen some of the most successful results in its fight against Covid-19 through swift border closures and effective social distancing rules. However, less than 5% of the Australian population has one of the lowest vaccination rates of any developed country, due to stalling rollouts.
