The inaugural SiGMA Poker Tour stop in São Paulo has brought a fresh wave of excitement to the poker world. To gain an insider’s perspective, we caught up with Adam Lamers, a seasoned live reporter for PokerNews, who has been covering the event first-hand.
Through the eyes of Lamers, the SiGMA Poker Tour in São Paulo is more than just a tournament—it’s a celebration of poker’s enduring appeal and the vibrant community behind it. His perspective offers a rare glimpse into the world of live poker reporting and the evolving landscape of modern poker events.
Lamers describes his position as a live reporter as “kind of unique.” He elaborates, “There’s not very many people who do this job in the world, so I feel kind of privileged in that way.” His role involves traveling globally to various poker events, observing hands, taking notes, and writing detailed reports for PokerNews.
Having been in the gaming industry for over 15 years, Lamers has developed a deep understanding of poker. “I’ve been with PokerNews since 2017, and I would even say that 90 percent of my friends are in the poker world,” he shares. This immersion has not only enhanced his reporting but also his playing skills. “Working in the industry has really improved my game as well,” he notes.
Lamers observes a significant growth in poker’s popularity, attributing it partly to the pandemic. “People didn’t have anything to do for 8 months, 12 months kind of thing. So online poker was a big deal. And after playing online poker, now they want to get involved in the live game,” he explains. This resurgence is evident in the record-breaking attendance at events like the SiGMA Poker Tour in São Paulo.
Discussing the differences between live and online poker, Lamers points out that while online platforms attract high-skilled players, live tables are more appealing to recreational players seeking social interaction. “The recreationals will interact with humans, and they like that personal touch,” he says.
Covering the SiGMA Poker Tour’s first-ever stop in São Paulo, Lamers has been impressed. “The accommodations, the food, the venue – everything’s been top-notch,” he remarks. He appreciates the state-of-the-art facilities and the professionalism of the staff, noting that the event has been “fabulous” and “fantastic.”
Lamers is optimistic about the future of the SiGMA Poker Tour. “I think SiGMA Poker Tour is on its way up, I think it’s just going to grow,” he predicts. He plans to continue following the tour, including its upcoming stop in Malta.
