Canadian gaming company CEO resigns after backlash for breaking COVID protocols

Former CEO of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, Rodney Baker, has resigned days after news surfaced that he had broken mandatory COVID-19 isolation protocols and stolen vaccines from vulnerable indigenous residents

Canadian officials have charged former president and CEO of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, Rodeny Baker, and his wife Ekatarina for breaking coronavirus protocols, in addition to lying in bid to receive the Moderna Vaccine intended for vulnerable indigenous residents.

Millionaire Rodney Baker, 55, and his wife Ekatarina, 32, violated COVID-19 rules when rather than self-isolating for the 2-week period, they decided to charter a plane to fly to the remote community of Beaver Creek, a community of 100 in Canada’s Yukon territory, in order to receive the Moderna vaccine meant for at-risk indigenous residents.

The Canadian Press  reported that the duo claimed they were employees of a local hotel in order to received the vaccine which was issued at a mobile vaccination clinic.

After uncovering the lies perpetuated by the duo via word of mouth, local authorities were able to locate the couple at the Whitehorse airport waiting to board their flight to Vancouver.

Rodney Baker confirmed his resignation after he was charged for his gross violations; both individuals facing fines of US$784 plus fees. The couple have 30 days to refute the claims in court.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Yukon Regional Chief Kluane Adamek said in a statement:

These actions are a blatant display of disrespect and an exemplification of true privilege and entitlement; a selfish millionaire and his wife, stole doses of the vaccine from a vulnerable population, and put an entire community, nation, and region at risk,

According to a statement issued by the White River’s First Nation, chief Angela Demit believed the penalty is too “lenient” given the gravity of the couples consequences on the local community. She further commented:

We are deeply concerned by the actions of individuals who put our Elders and vulnerable people at risk to jump the line for selfish purposes.

The Great Canadian Gaming Corporation informed the public on Monday that Baker had resigned on 23 January, and has revoked his position in the company’s board of directors.
