Casino in Texas! Committee claims ‘half a million’ support move

Written by Ansh Pandey

A political action committee (PAC) in Texas has launched a new campaign to promote the legalisation of casino resorts in the state, urging lawmakers to allow residents to vote on the matter.

The Texas Destination Resort Alliance (TDRA), backed by industry stakeholders and local supporters, argues that such resorts would bring significant economic benefits to the Lone Star State.

The TDRA’s latest campaign, titled “Let Texans Vote on Destination Resorts,” aims to reshape the state’s casino landscape. The campaign features advertisements with Texans from diverse backgrounds advocating for casino resorts as a means to create better-paying jobs and generate additional tax revenue for education and other public services.

Supporters describe the legalisation of casino resorts as a “smart business move.” They argue that it would prevent Texans from spending money at casinos in neighbouring states like Louisiana and Nevada or on illegal gambling websites. “It’s time to keep that revenue here in Texas and grow our economy,” said one backer.

500,000 Texans support the move?

The campaign builds on earlier efforts by the organisation, which claims that over 500,000 Texans already support the introduction of destination resorts. As the second most populous state in the US, Texas is seen as an untapped market with immense potential. Casino and hospitality giant Las Vegas Sands has been a key advocate, actively lobbying for legalisation.

However, Texas remains one of the most conservative states when it comes to gambling. The state has consistently resisted legalising casino gambling due to concerns over social and economic consequences.

Critics argue that casinos could lead to higher crime rates, gambling addiction, and financial instability. The Republican Party of Texas has formally opposed such efforts, urging legislators to halt initiatives promoting casino gambling.

Additionally, influential political figures, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, have been vocal opponents, recently denying requests to advance related legislation. The state’s leadership remains cautious despite growing lobbying efforts from major casino operators.

Officials oppose legalisation

Further complicating the path to legalisation, several Republican lawmakers who previously supported casino resorts have either retired or lost their seats in recent elections.

Moreover, the new Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Dustin Burrows, defeated a rival who was more likely to support the initiative. His stance on the matter remains uncertain, but he may be hesitant to oppose casino legislation outright given its growing popularity among constituents and stakeholders.

Despite these challenges, momentum for casino gambling legislation continues to grow in Texas. With rising public support and increasing industry pressure, the debate over legalisation is far from over.
