The Cebu City government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) following a directive from Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla. As reported by the Philippine News Agency, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia highlighted the city’s proactive stance, revealing that a dedicated task force, led by the Cebu City Police Office, has been operational even before the national directive.
The task force has been conducting inspections of establishments with business models that could resemble POGOs, aiming to ensure they are not operating under the guise of legitimate businesses. Thus far, no irregularities have been discovered.
Strengthening intelligence gathering
Garcia acknowledged the possibility that some illegal POGOs may be hiding behind legitimate operations. To address this, he emphasised the importance of enhanced intelligence efforts in partnership with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
As a local government unit under the direct supervision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Cebu City is aligning its strategies with national goals to eliminate illegal gaming and scam hubs. Garcia assured residents that local authorities are on high alert to uncover any clandestine operations.
National directive to intensify monitoring
During a recent Commission on Appointments hearing, Remulla called on local government units (LGUs) to intensify their monitoring of businesses, particularly those disguising themselves as resorts or restaurants to conduct illegal POGO operations. The DILG has emphasised the need for routine inspections to prevent such establishments from proliferating.
Remulla’s order underscores the broader effort to curb the social and economic harm caused by illegal gaming activities. Local chief executives have been urged to play a critical role in this initiative, ensuring that their jurisdictions are not exploited by these schemes.
Cebu City’s commitment to vigilance
While no evidence of illegal POGOs has been found in Cebu City so far, Garcia assured the public of continued vigilance. The city’s task force and law enforcement agencies are focused on identifying any potential hubs operating in secrecy.
By proactively addressing the issue, Cebu City is setting an example for other LGUs, demonstrating how local governance can align with national efforts to maintain public safety and economic integrity.
Cebu City’s commitment to intelligence-driven enforcement reflects a strong resolve to protect its communities from the adverse effects of illegal gaming operations, ensuring a secure and law-abiding environment for all.
