Chile’s government unveils plan to legalise online gambling

‘Will Chile follow Colombia’s sterling example adopting a European open-styled regulatory regime?”

With lockdown measures still in place in Chile, the Ministry of Finance is expected to introduce a new bill to regulate online sports betting, internet casino games and other forms of betting online.

ministry of FinanceApart from protecting the gaming market, the new bill is also set to protect the safety of players as authorities would better monitor the activities of licensed operators.

The Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, pointed out that this would also help generate more tax income for the country.

Chile is still on the road to economic recovery from COVID-19. With land-based casinos still shut, the government is looking for other sources of tax income.

“Casinos are relevant for the economic development of the country both in their contribution to the financing of the municipalities and regional governments through the payment of taxes and in the development of tourism in the regions,” said the Ministry of Finance.

Michael MuscatSpeaking to SiGMA News, Michael Muscat, partner at iGaming Colombia said “The Chilean market is indeed enigmatic when compared with other LATAM countries, yet with this comes a great opportunity for online casino operators. A country that is currently knee deep in social change, the Chilean player’s preference for online payment methods, poker and casino games single it out in a continent that is known to be sports crazy.

This coupled with a presence of affiliates make Chile a highly advanced jurisdiction within the region. All that is missing is a streamlined and welcoming legal approach. Will Chile follow Colombia’s sterling example adopting a European open-styled regulatory regime?”

With Chile entering the regulated online gambling market, this could be a great opportunity for affiliates aiming to expand their international outreach.
