China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy recently issued a surprising yet insightful warning to young soldiers about the dangers of online dating scams and virtual gambling. This alert highlights how seemingly harmless online activities can threaten national security and personal well-being. Specifically targeting those born after 1990, the message advises young officers to avoid revealing their military identities and warns about the risks of becoming addicted to virtual gambling.
Why the Navy issued warning?
The navy’s warning came as online scams and gambling increasingly target younger people. These schemes can easily lure unsuspecting individuals, particularly those new to military life and regulations. Criminals may attempt to exploit military personnel by gathering information or leveraging financial difficulties created by gambling debts.
Online dating poses unique risks for soldiers, as scammers can use platforms to gather personal information that might reveal military affiliations or sensitive data. Stories abound globally of military personnel who unwittingly shared details about their service, making them vulnerable to blackmail or threats. This concern is magnified when dealing with younger, potentially less cautious soldiers who might not see the immediate risks in connecting online.
Virtual gambling, though illegal in China, remains accessible through unofficial channels. For military personnel, gambling addictions can lead to severe financial troubles, making them vulnerable to coercion or exploitation.
PLA Navy’s advisory
In its advisory post, the PLA Navy provided straightforward tips to its young soldiers. The navy emphasised the need for discernment when engaging online, urging them to avoid disclosing personal details and to be selective with online relationships. The post encouraged soldiers to distinguish carefully when interacting with people on the internet and reminded them of the potential consequences of neglecting their security obligations.
The post said, “Distinguish carefully and keep some distance when making friends online and never lose sight of your principles and make random friends with netizens”.
President Xi Jinping’s message to military
President Xi Jinping, China’s commander-in-chief, has stressed the need for absolute loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. Xi’s frequent calls for discipline and ideological unity serve as reminders to both senior and junior personnel about their roles in promoting a strong, unified military.
At a recent conference, Xi extended his concerns to senior military officials, emphasising loyalty and self-reflection. According to Xi, issues such as scams, addiction, and lack of discipline often stem from weakened beliefs and ideals. His message underscores the importance of ideological alignment to ensure a secure and effective military structure.
