‘Wander far from home but never lose sight of where you came from’ – Alexander ”Sonni” Fenech

The support triumvirate between the Gozo-based Missionary Movement, the Brown’s chain of pharmacies and the new kid on the block, SiGMA Foundation, augurs well. We caught up with the Foundation’s Chief Philanthropy officer, Keith Marshall for an overview of what’s going on.

A wise man once told me that one exists within a comfort zone but one lives or indeed, possibly thrives beyond it. ‘Wander far from home but never lose sight of where you came from. Run when you would need to but remain firmly anchored to the ground in your outlook on life, especially so within the context of others.

We have a moral obligation to do what we can with as many as we can. We have been privileged with a proper upbringing, let’s bring it home, let’s make our parents proud….let’s pass it forward’. – Alexander ”Sonni” Fenech.

Many, many moons later, the conversation still resonates warmly within my mind and memory. Beautiful words indeed but what made them remarkable was their element of clairvoyance – back then, the man, Alexander ‘Sonni’ Fenech was still nowhere and by and large, just another name in the crowd. Fast forward 3 decades, having swash buckled his way successfully through various businesses – there it looms, large and loud….the man’s flagship enterprise, the Brown’s chain of pharmacies – who’s logo we have worn, loud and proud on many an adventure and expedition up mountains.

Our credo as the SiGMA Foundation is to do our best to combine charity and adventure and to use this combination as a fund-raising platform for our overseas projects. But it is that much more comforting and inspirational when it falls under the auspice of an enterprise that, through hell or high water, has always put its best foot forward to assist us financially – and very generously at that.

Together, we have raised a million euro towards various projects in Ethiopia. Thank you Sonni, thank you Robert, thank you Browns and a big thank you to the Missionary Movement. This is part of our legacy, long may it continue.
