Constanța Casino, a historic landmark on the Black Sea coast of Romania, has reopened after four years of restoration. Approximately 85 percent of the $45.16 million project is complete. Despite ongoing maintenance, the casino has undergone a stunning transformation, and guests are now welcome to enjoy its restored magnificence.
On 21 May 2025, Constanța Casino reopened to the public in a ceremony coinciding with the feast day of Saints Constantine and Helena, the city’s spiritual guardians. The timing was symbolic, linking the past and future as the historic monument, which has witnessed decades of history, proudly stands once again.
Reopening Constanța Casino is a milestone moment for the city and its citizens. Years of waiting and careful rehabilitation have transformed the casino from a relic of the past into a vibrant centre of culture. Culture Minister Natalia Intotero emphasised the significance of this achievement at the opening ceremony.
Culture Minister Intotero shared in a Facebook post, “Buildings are not just walls, they’re stories waiting to be told again. Today, on the feast day of Saints Constantine and Helena, I had the honour of being present at the inauguration of the Constanța Casino, a symbol dear to us all, returned to the community after years of waiting. A symbolic city monument, built between 1904 and 1910 and recognised for its Art Nouveau style, the casino has been completely restored, preserving its former charm and elegance.”
The restoration of Constanța Casino, which began in 2020, was a comprehensive project involving structural reinforcements and the recreation of architectural details. The National Investment Company and Constanța City Hall spearheaded the project. Engineer Marius Stan provided technical direction, while architect Radu Cornescu contributed the artistic vision, ensuring a balance between modern engineering and historic preservation.
The restoration of Constanța Casino, an Art Nouveau masterpiece that opened its doors in 1910, was a massive task. With its ornate stained glass, majestic staircases, and delicate ornamental details, the new development has regained its former beauty.
Strengthening the building’s structure was a major priority to ensure its long-term durability and safety. Modern electrical systems, thermal insulation, and cutting-edge ventilation were all expertly incorporated into the historic framework, along with structural reinforcements and a complete renovation behind the walls.
The history of Constanța Casino began in 1880, with its current structure preceded by several earlier buildings. Each version was more elaborate but also more vulnerable; one was even destroyed in a storm. Enter Swiss-Romanian architect Daniel Renard, renowned for his imaginative creations and dramatic flair. Through his efforts, the casino came to life in a way that has endured over time. Renard’s reputation as a master of Romanian architecture was cemented with his designs for the Palace of Justice and the Royal Palace in Constanța.
In 2007, director Francis Ford Coppola used the casino as a backdrop in “Youth Without Youth.” Its ghostly beauty made it the perfect film set — eerie, elegant, and unforgettable. By 2014, Constanța Casino had fallen into disrepair due to years of neglect, leading to its closure. However, the city remained determined. A detailed restoration plan was initiated in 2019, with actual work commencing in 2020.
