Corona Resort and Casino in Vietnam announces grand re-opening

The casino went through a month-long pause amid the Covid-19 pandemic

The Corona Resort and Casino located on Phu Quoc island in south Vietnam is back open and operational following a three-week closure amid COVID-19. The casino is one of the two first properties in the county that were allowed by the government to offer gambling to economically-qualified locals, under a long-flagged three-year trial scheme.

Vietnamese are allowed to gamble only if they meet certain qualifying criteria, including a minimum monthly wage of VND10 million (US$433). The other casino in Vietnam catering to locals is expected to be located in Northern Vietnam at Van Don.

The two-floor, US $2.1 billion resort has a total area of 18,800 square metres

Netherlands-based Upffinity Gaming was appointed in 2017 by the Phu Quoc Tourism Development and Investment Company JSC, to provide “casino management and advisory services” for Corona Resort and Casino.

The two-floor and US$2.1 billion resort, which opened its first phase in January 2019, has a total area of 18,800 square metres.

According to the corporate presentation, the casino includes a total of 100 gaming tables, offering eight kinds of games such as baccarat, roulette, blackjack and poker. Furthermore, the casino has 1,000 slot machines, and close to 1,000 electronic gaming machines and similar.

Despite sharing a land border with China where COVID-19 first emerged, Vietnam has reported just 271 cases and not a single death in a population of 100 million. The country’s government has not reported any new local cases in nearly three weeks.
