COVID restrictions continue despite Italian gaming operators’ appeal

Gambling venues in Italy remain closed until March 5 after operators loose appeal against restrictions issued to mitigate the spread to COVID-19

The administrative court in Lazio, Italy, have forced operators to keep their doors shut until March 5 in bid to keep the pandemic under control. The move comes to the dismay of the land-based industry –  who feel they are being singled out after their appeals against restrictions were refuted.

Italian operators had issued an appeal against the regulation put in place by the Council of Ministers, and the Customs and Monopoly Agency, in hopes to forgo any more financial destruction. The measures currently put in place are due to expire on 5 March, yet there are concerns that this will be extended.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases have peaked again across Europe, Italy being no exception as 87,381 deaths and 2.52M cases are recorded.

Iari Fondi shared the real life effects of COVID-19 on his gaming business in Altopascio to the Corriere Fiorentino newspaper:

Behind the prolonged closure of gaming companies there is a precise political will, hidden by the health emergency, that is using the devastating effects of Covid-19 to bring the legal and public gaming industry to its knees.

He continued:

If on March 5 we don’t start again, I don’t know what will happen.

Nonetheless, operators aren’t giving up and are waiting for a final court hearing on February 10 in reference to the petition.
