Danish Gambling Authority expands efforts against unlicensed operator

The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has intensified its crackdown on illegal gambling in 2024, as revealed in its latest annual report. The regulator has strengthened its enforcement measures by forming new partnerships, expanding legal oversight, and tackling emerging threats such as Robux betting.

Strengthening digital enforcement with Twitch, Apple, and Google

To combat unauthorised gambling, the Danish Gambling Authority has expanded its cooperation with major digital platforms. In 2024, it partnered with Twitch, allowing it to report and remove illegal gambling content from the popular live-streaming platform. This move aligns with its existing collaborations with Apple, Facebook, and Google, which help block unlicensed gambling websites and apps from reaching Danish users.

The authority continues to monitor digital platforms closely, ensuring that illegal gambling promotions are swiftly removed. It encourages users to report suspicious gambling content to aid enforcement efforts.

One of the major concerns highlighted in the report is the growing issue of Robux betting—a practice where players use Robux, the in-game currency from Roblox, as stakes in online gambling. Several third-party websites have been identified facilitating these activities, often targeting young players.

Robux can be converted into real money through Roblox’s Developer Exchange Program (DevEx), bringing it under Danish gambling laws. In August 2024, the Court of Frederiksberg ruled that any website offering Robux-based gambling in Danish must comply with Denmark’s gambling regulations. This decision reinforces that using virtual currencies in betting is subject to the same legal restrictions as traditional gambling.

Encouraging public reporting and further actions

The Danish Gambling Authority continues to urge the public to report illegal gambling activities. By working closely with law enforcement and digital platforms, the regulator aims to safeguard Danish consumers, particularly young players, from unlicensed operators.

As the online gambling landscape evolves, Denmark remains committed to enforcing strict regulations, ensuring that gambling activities remain legal, transparent, and safe for all users.
