Denmark’s gambling industry recorded strong growth in 2024, with total gross gaming revenue (GGR) reaching DKK 7.27 billion ($1.02 billion). This marks a 6.9 percent increase compared to 2023, according to the latest figures from Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority.
Online casino performed best, taking almost half of all gambling returns. Betting increased as well, while land-based casinos saw a modest increase. Gaming machines, however, was the only one to decrease.
The online casino segment saw the largest annual increase, with GGR rising 14.7 percent year-on-year to DKK 3.53 billion. This sector made up 48.5 percent of total gambling revenue.
December was the highest-earning month for online casino, with gaming machines contributing 78.2 percent of total online casino revenue.
Betting revenue also saw growth, though at a smaller rate than online casino. The total GGR for betting reached DKK 2.21 billion, up 1.2 percent from 2023.
Mobile betting continued to dominate, with 66.3 percent of all bets placed via mobile devices. This highlights the strong preference for mobile betting among Danish players.
Gaming machines were the only sector to experience a decline in 2024. The total GGR for this segment fell 1.2 percent to DKK 1.16 billion, with an average daily revenue of DKK 3.18 million.
This drop suggests a shift in player preferences towards online gaming options.
Denmark’s land casinos saw DKK 368 million of GGR for 2024, a 1.7 percent rise on the previous year. This channel contributed the least to the general gambling market.
In spite of the minor fall in gaming machine turnover, the Danish gambling market overall posted strong growth in 2024, which was led primarily by the success of online casinos and stable betting turnover.
With mobile betting leading the way and gaming machines losing ground, the industry may see further digital expansion in the coming years.
