Denmark: mobile sportsbooks and online casino lead revenue growth

While regulated gambling revenue in Denmark for 2020 fell by 9.3% from the previous year, online casino and mobile sportsbook growth were the largest contributors

According to the latest figures reported from gambling authority Spillmyndigheden, Denmark’s regulated gambling revenue for the year 2020 declined to DKK5.96bn (£704.2m/$971.8m) while online gaming and mobile sportsbooks lead revenue growth. This was a result of the nationwide lockdown for the land-based industry, from March to June and then from November 2020 onwards.

The gaming industry experienced an almost complete shutdown of all sporting and gaming events since March due to COVID-19. However, online casinos were unaffected by the lockdown measures and cancellations with year-on-year recorded growth in revenue.

A shift in customer preferences was observed as in 2020, 51.5% of revenue was generated via mobile sportsbooks, and only 14.8% from betting sites online. Notably, mobile market shares surged compared to 2019, yet this was at the expense of desktop sites.

Nonetheless, it is reported that the 5.0% year-on-year rise in revenue (DKK2.45bn) observed is the lowest increase for online casinos since the Danish iGaming market launched in 2012.

With regards to products, online slots added DKK1.82bn, forming 74.4% of the total value, roulette contributed DKK231.9m (9.5%) and blackjack added DKK166.6m (6.8%). These figures indicate that the pandemic acted as a catalyst for online gaming adoption.

The most significant declines were faced by land-based venues such as slots and brick-and-mortar casinos. Slots revenue went down 29.0% at DKK986m, and casino revenue dropped 31.5% to DKK239m.

In recent news, the Dutch Gaming Authority finalises guidelines ahead of online gaming launch.
