In March 2025, Danes increased their total gambling spend by 1.4 percent year-on-year, driven almost entirely by a 6.4 percent surge in online casino revenue, while traditional verticals like betting and land-based casinos edged down slightly. This follows a similar 0.6 percent uptick in February. The March figures also mark the debut of land-based bingo as a standalone category in monthly reporting, reflecting regulatory changes implemented on 1 January 2025. These monthly trends reinforce insights from the Authority’s 2024 annual report, which showed Denmark’s total gambling expenditure reached DKK 11.0 billion (a 5.6 percent increase on 2023), with online operators capturing an ever-greater share of the market.

March 2025 gambling spend analysis

Figures released on 9 May by the Danish Gambling Authority show that total gambling spend in March amounted to a 1.4 percent increase over March 2024. This growth was entirely driven by online casino activity, which saw revenue climb 6.4 percent year-on-year. Conversely, spending on betting products, gaming machines, and land-based casinos each recorded slight declines.

In contrast, land-based verticals remain under pressure: betting spend is marginally down, and brick-and-mortar casinos and gaming-machine halls continue to see small revenue contractions.

Land-based bingo enters monthly reporting

March 2025 also marked the first inclusion of land-based bingo as an independent category in the Authority’s monthly statistics, following regulatory amendments on 1 January 2025 that liberalised commercial bingo operations. Previously, all bingo activity—commercial and charitable—was aggregated under lottery figures; charitable bingo remains reported under the lottery segment.

Insights from “The Gambling Market in Numbers 2024″

Published on 29 April 2025, the annual report provides a deeper look at Denmark’s regulated gambling sector over the full year. Total gambling expenditure in 2024 reached DKK 11.0 billion (approximately USD 1.6 billion), up 5.6 percent from 2023. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the year totalled DKK 7.27 billion, with online casinos contributing nearly half of that amount.

Channelisation rate and online dominance

The report highlights a channelisation rate of 91.5 percent—the share of online gambling conducted through licensed Danish operators—up from 90.8 percent in 2023. This positions Denmark among the top five regulated online gambling markets globally.

Responsible gambling initiatives

The Authority continues to expand responsible-gambling measures, including its ROFUS self-exclusion register and the StopSpillet counselling helpline. A new public-awareness campaign against unlicensed gambling was launched in late 2024 to further protect consumers.

Regulatory and licensing developments

Aside from performance statistics, the Authority has introduced new certification requirements for game suppliers, and absolute compliance is in place by July 2025. These measures aim at increasing oversight throughout the digital supply chain and obtaining uniform standards for all operators to supply Danish consumers.

As digital channels continue to surpass conventional forms, licensed online casinos look set to continue expanding in 2025. The recent addition of land-based bingo and continued responsible gambling improvements indicate regulators are aiming for a balanced strategy—encouraging industry innovation while protecting consumer well-being.
