The SiGMA Foundation has once again made a profound impact on life through its transformative GLOW initiative. In the pages of SiGMA Magazine Issue 30, readers are introduced to the heartwarming story of baby Elias David, a joyful boy from the vibrant town of Bolivar, Colombia. This initiative not only highlights the foundation’s commitment to making a difference but also sheds light on the incredible journey of hope and change for Elias and his family.
Elias David was born with a cleft lip and palate. Despite this condition, he radiates infectious smiles and boundless energy that brings joy to his family. He is one of 14 children in Bolivar supported by the SiGMA Foundation’s GLOW initiative. Elias’ operation was made possible thanks to funding from Maltese couple Michelle and Patrick Meli and a group of their classmates from the St Aloysius College class of 1982.
“We feel privileged to have been part of the expedition in Colombia, we hope it won’t be the last. There must be more.”
– Michelle & Patrick Meli, Sponsors of GLOW Initiative in Colombia
In an interview with Elias’ mother, Ana, she discussed the overwhelming mix of emotions she experienced when recalling her son’s first operation. She expressed her relief upon seeing Elias after the procedure and emphasised her trust in both God and the doctors. Ana reflected on how this event ultimately strengthened her as a mother in her son’s life.
“To see a child who comes in with a cleft and who, with just one hour of good surgery, can be completely normal is extremely powerful. It’s not only a change for the child, but also for the whole family.”
– Dr Carolina Restrepo & Dr Alex Campbell, Founders of Premium Care Kids
The doctors explained how this operation impacts the children’s future and the significance it holds for their families. Thanks to the multidisciplinary approach of Premium Care Kids—a foundation established by Dr Restrepo, Dr Campbell, and their specialised team—children like Elias receive a new chance at life.
The SiGMA Foundation, originally established with a focus on educational initiatives, has now expanded its mission to make an impact on the health of the children in the region. The foundation is currently funding 60 surgeries, which will provide crucial medical care to young patients in need. This commitment not only addresses immediate health concerns but also opens the door to a brighter future for these children, giving them the opportunity to thrive and lead healthier lives.
“Elias David’s story perfectly exemplifies this broader impact. Through a simple 30-minute surgery, the Foundation can dramatically alter the lives of children like Elias, giving them the opportunity to go on to lead well rounded, happy lives.”
