English supporters catch EURO 2020 betting fever

The EUROs has seen an increase in betting activity in the UK with its peak happening minutes before the England vs Croatia game

According to Worldpay, sports betting popularity in the UK is surging thanks to EURO 2020 finally kicking off. The tournament was supposed to be played last summer but due to the pandemic, it got pushed to this summer – with many supporters waiting in anticipation to wear their country’s colours and emblem with pride.

This was no different in England, who are known to be passionate fans when it comes to the national team. This was definitely proven through the betting activity of hardcore and casual punters in the UK, especially during the lead up to England’s first game in the EUROs vs Croatia.

Ian Kay, VP, Gaming & Trading for EMEA at Worldpay confirmed that betting activity in the UK had increased significantly especially when the England vs Croatia game was getting closer, with pre-match betting activity peaking 6 minutes before the game.

However, England were not the sole drivers of this increase in betting activity. Scotland and Wales also played a part as the hype around the UK countries reaches its peak.

Betting activity has increased so much that online bookmakers were receiving 38 payments every second on the England vs Croatia game, with Ian Kay warning operators to brace themselves for an increase in betting for evening kick-offs, especially tonight with England vs Scotland scheduled for 21:00 hours.
