Eugene Katchalov on iGaming strategy, business development, and poker’s key challenge

Written by Jenny Ortiz

The global online poker market is set for strong growth between 2025 and 2034, driven by increasing internet penetration, mobile adoption, and technological advancements, according to the report of Custom Market Insights. The report also said that by 2033, the market is projected to reach $302.2 billion, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2 percent.

Europe is expected to remain the dominant region due to the legalisation of online gambling in countries like Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. However, Asia-Pacific is also expanding rapidly, fuelled by rising disposable incomes and a growing appetite for online gaming. The market’s evolution is further supported by the increasing popularity of live dealer poker games, which blend the convenience of online play with the immersive experience of live casinos.

Speaking with SiGMA TV, Eugene Katchalov, former professional poker player and co-founder of QLASH, shared insights on his journey from competitive poker to business development in the iGaming industry. “I started playing with friends and then found out that there’s something called online poker,” he said. As he gained experience, he realised that poker could become more than just a side income. “I could make a little bit extra money actually doing it. And I was like, wow, this is pretty cool.”

Katchalov’s poker career flourished, enabling him to travel and build a broad network. “I could become my own boss, I could travel the world, meet a lot of very interesting people,” he noted. Katchalov said that the transition from poker to business was a natural progression, leveraging his competitive mindset and strategic thinking.

The evolution of iGaming

As the iGaming industry evolves, Katchalov sees QLASH as a platform that bridges competitive gaming and online poker communities. He said that QLASH, which focuses on esports and gaming-related content, aims to create new opportunities for players and businesses in the digital space. “We’re seeing a shift in how gaming and entertainment interact, and we want to be at the forefront of that change,” he explained.

“There’s a growing demand for platforms that can integrate gaming, competition, and community engagement in a seamless way,” he added.

The growing divide in poker: Professionals vs recreational players

One of the pressing issues in poker today is the widening gap between professional and recreational players. Katchalov acknowledged that advanced tools and training have changed the game. “The skill level in poker has risen dramatically, and it’s becoming harder for casual players to compete,” he said. With sophisticated software and artificial intelligence (AI) aiding professionals, recreational players often feel disadvantaged.

To address this, Katchalov believes the industry must find ways to maintain poker’s accessibility. “It’s important to create environments where new players can enjoy the game without feeling overwhelmed by the skill gap,” he noted.
