Fresh cases of COVID-19 halts Kangwon Land reopening

Kangwon Land has postponed plans to reopen its doors after spike in Covid cases

South Korea – Kangwon Land, the only casino in the country that allows locals to gamble, has once again pushed back their reopening date to 13 July. 

This following an emergency meeting on Thursday by the property executives, stating the surge of new positive COVID-19 cases. 

Kangwon Land’s operations were suspended on 23rd February and have since announced several reopening datesIt reopened its VIP gaming floor last 8th of May with reported health and safety regulations in place, which includes sneeze guards, social distancing and mandatory wearing of face masks for both clients and employees.

The property announced that parts of the main gaming floor would be available in a “pilot operation”, allowing only 1,200 guests to be accommodated daily to ensure adherence to social distancing measures. But the scheduled reopening for the main gaming floor was postponed with a plan to re-visit the decision on a later date, following advice from the national authorities.  

Also in May, the property was given permission by the country’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to extend its’s operating hours and to add more gaming tables as soon the mass gaming activities resume, with operating hours extending from 18 hours to 20 hours daily, and the additional gaming tables from 160 to 180 

The South Korean government began easing COVID-19 restrictions earlier in May, allowing several businesses to reopen and gatherings to take place as long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to. However, later in May, the government reimpose preventive measures in capital Seoul for two weeks, to control the spike of new COVID-19 cases.
