Game on for casinos in Poland after Covid-19 mishap

Poland, one of the most promising gaming emerging markets in Europe has re-opened its casinos as the government partially lifted its temporary pandemic restrictions

US gaming giant, Century Casinos, which operates eight land-based casinos across the country announced that its subsidiary Casinos Poland Ltd, in which the company holds a 66.6 per cent ownership interest, reopened all its eight casinos two days ago.

Casinos, like many other entertainment locations, were closed last March to comply with a quarantine imposed by the Polish government to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The regulation lifting the lockdown for casinos still includes social distancing practices and enhanced health and safety protocols.

So far, there is no assurance that the Polish government will not require additional closures in the future in case virus cases increase once again.

Commenting on the latest developments, Century Casinos said that the company “looks forward to welcoming guests and team members back to Polish casinos.”

“This is a very important step to lead our company back to normal operations in Poland,” the spokesman said.

Though highly regulated, the Polish gambling market is considered as the most prosperous in Eastern Europe with 37 per cent of all Poles participate regularly in some form of gaming activity.

In 2020, the Polish gaming market stood at some €5 billion, a massive 275 per cent increase on its 2018 value.
