Goa to close all casinos for two weeks

Casinos, educational institutions, bars, clubs, gyms… All to be closed temporarily by the Indian Government

Along with the Indian government’s lock-up policy, India’s Goa State has ordered the temporary closure of casinos. The objective of this measures announced by the Indian government on Saturday is to combat the proliferation of COVID-19.

According to the local gaming industry website Glaws, all casinos, educational institutions, gyms, spas, bars, clubs, public pools and theaters in Goa will be closed until March 31, 2020. Only restaurants and shopping malls will remain open to the public.

The Government had previously planned to recommend various precautionary measures to Goa’s casino operators. However, after seeing how the epidemic escalated globally over the weekend, the decision was to shut down the industry altogether. Goa is home to seven maritime ‘floating’ casinos and nine maritime casinos.

The gaming conference SPiCE, that was originally going to take place from 25 to 27 March at the Goa Marriott Resort & Spa, was also cancelled due to the federal government cancelling all foreign national visas. The announcement was made just a few days before Goa’s casino closure was reported.
