GOA Transport Minister demands relocation of floating casinos

GOA Transport Minister, Mauvin Godinho, proposes a number of measures to ease Panaji’s traffic congestion and pollution issue

On Thursday, GOA Transport Minister, Mauvin Godinho, declared that the offices and operations of the six offshore casinos need to be relocated from the city center and closer to the multi-level parking facility, in a bid to resolve Panaji’s traffic congestion.

According to TimesofIndia, the Transport Minister stated:

A very important step that needs to be taken to decongest the city. There are major congestions near casinos because of parking of taxis and other vehicles. All the offices of the casinos should be compulsorily moved to one place, maybe the jetty. Those who want to go to casinos will automatically land there and they must park at the multi-level parking facility, whether you come in a luxury car or in a vehicle or buses.

Mauvin GodinhoGodinho (pictured) also raised concern over the quality of public transport in Panaji and offered to provide city additional electric shuttle buses for the Corporation of the City of Panaji. He also outlined how there is a need for more traffic signals as he believes it can address the traffic congestions in Panaji.

I also appeal to the casinos to operate small shuttle buses so that people are picked up and dropped to the casinos. If the council asks for it, from the department, I will be forthcoming to give the shuffle buses so that congestion in Panaji is resolved. The haphazard parking has to stop, Godinho said.

The CCP Mayor, Uday Madkaikar, spoke with Godinho and assured him that there are plans in the works to move the casino offices to another location.

Godinho further stated that casino staff and customers should utilise the multi-story parking which will help reduce congestion in Panaji.

Goa is known for its electric scene and bustling nightlife, adopting the nickname – The party capital of India. The state is home to a number of offshore casinos which are moored in the Mandovi River and one can also find land-based casinos in the areas high end hotels and beaches. The state of Goa is the only state in India that allows both electronic land based casinos as well as live offshore casinos.
