Google Ads now allows sports betting ads in New York

Google has amended its gambling policy to accept ads for sports betting from certified and state-licensed companies

New York state has started enabling sports bets to be placed by mobile or internet. As a result, Google has changed its Google Ads gambling policy to enable ads for sports betting from New York State-certified and state-licensed organizations. The New York State Gaming Commission confirmed that this has taken effect already.

The Google Ads Gambling and Games policy United States country-specifics have been revised this January 2022 according to a notice published by Google. Beginning January 8, the company has started accepting and displaying ads for sports betting from certified, state-licensed entities in New York. “When the policy goes into force,” Google stated, “the Gambling and gaming policy page will be modified.”

Only ‘certified partners’ recognised by Google will be able to advertise sportsbooks regulated within the state of New York on Google platforms.

The state gaming commission permitted Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers (Rush Interactive) to launch their mobile sportsbook services in New York. Despite obtaining New York licenses, Ballys, BetMGM, PointsBet, Resorts World, and WynnBet’s mobile sportsbooks have yet to be certified for launch, which will be monitored on a rolling basis.

Advertisers must apply for certification, Google said, adding that from January 7, 2022, applications for certification will be open to advertisers who desire to promote online gambling content in this region. Google has verified that it has opened its application and certification procedure for advertisers interested in publishing online gambling material that complies with New York State Gambling Commission regulations.

Twitter allows US sportsbook advertising on its platform, but only if the advertisers are based in the United States, and the ads must carry disclaimers about online gambling. Meanwhile, Facebook retains its global gambling content policy, which requires marketers to obtain Facebook’s direct ‘written approval’ before promoting any sort of real money games/gambling advertising across its digital platforms.

Finally, Google stated that with the regulation going into force, its US Gambling and Games page has been amended. As of now, Google is the only tech giant that has released precise terms for advertising in New York sportsbooks.
