A potential gambling advertising ban in Australia is being opposed by the New South Wales (NSW) greyhound racing industry.
The organisation is claiming that such a ban would negatively affect the welfare of the dogs and may even lead to the closure of animal welfare programs.
Greyhound Racing New South Wales (GRNSW) is claiming that such restrictions as those being proposed would have a devastating impact on the industry, the animals, clubs, the tracks and even extend through these to local communities.
The impact would be so great according to GRNSW has estimated that a loss of over $20 million could be felt by the racing sector in NSW over the course of a year.
Financially this loss could see many entities and organisations that GRNSW supports such as animal welfare programmes, greyhound adoption, rehoming efforts and safety initiatives.
The greyhound racing industry as a whole is urging its members to contact federal ministers to express these concerns.
Emphasising these concerns, the industry’s leaders are also highlighting that a ban on gambling inducement could also affect the future of greyhound racing across not just the state but the Oceanic nation in its entirety.
These efforts may prove to be highly significant with a serious debate being sparked to make an exception to the advertising ban for greyhound racing.
Community feedback and voter sentiment will most certainly be considered in relation to these claims, with gambling companies and harm-reduction advocates lobbying federal ministers to avoid diluting the recommendations brought forth.
Despite these claims from GRNSW, a significant increase in injuries and deaths among racing greyhounds was recorded, leading animal welfare advocates to refute the organisation’s argument.
These advocates have suggested that the most effective method for welfare improvement in this area would be the closure of the greyhound racing industry.
