The Hong Kong Football Club Horse Racing Syndicate is on the brink of making history as its prized horse, Rubylot, prepares to compete in the BMW Hong Kong Derby on 30 March 2025. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious races in the city, the Derby represents the pinnacle of Hong Kong horse racing, and the syndicate’s hopes are pinned on what they describe as their “best horse ever.”
The syndicate, believed to be the first ever registered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, has been involved in horse racing for over 40 years. Over time, they have owned a series of racehorses, each incorporating the word “lot” into their names, a tradition that began with their very first successful horse, My Lot.
Rubylot, trained by David Hayes and ridden by Brenton Avdulla, enters the Derby as the race favourite, following a dominant victory in the Classic Cup (1,800m) last month. With six wins from 18 starts, including three this season, the talented galloper boasts the highest rating in the field, sitting at a formidable 100 points.
Philip Nunn, the syndicate’s treasurer and manager, credits their success to the expertise of trainer David Hayes, who has been instrumental in sourcing the right horses for them.
Nunn explained that after decades of racing, Rubylot stands out as their finest horse to date. He acknowledged the vital role Hayes has played in selecting horses for the syndicate, emphasising how valuable it is to have a knowledgeable and trusted trainer. Given that they operate on a relatively modest budget, having a reliable expert like Hayes makes a significant difference, Nunn added.
If Rubylot wins in the Derby, it will mark Hayes’ second victory in the race, having previously won in 2003 with Elegant Fashion. Rubylot will start from gate four, a position that Hayes considers ideal for the challenging 2,000m Sha Tin track. Jockey Brenton Avdulla, who is aiming for his first Derby win, remains confident in the horse’s abilities.
The syndicate, currently comprising 12 members, describes its involvement in horse racing as a passion rather than a business venture. “We just enjoy it,” Nunn said. “It’s a great social group, and we never expected to have a horse as talented as Rubylot.”
Winning the Hong Kong Derby is a career-defining achievement for any horse, trainer, or jockey. Rubylot’s performance this Sunday will determine whether the Hong Kong Football Club Horse Racing Syndicate achieves its most significant victory to date.
As the countdown to the Derby begins, all eyes will be on Rubylot to see if he can deliver on his potential and secure his place in Hong Kong racing history.
