Horse racing legend bears the torch for World Pool

The global horse racing pools organization, World Pool, has teamed up with legendary jockey Frankie Dettori for his final year in the saddle. As part of the partnership, Dettori will serve as a World Pool ambassador, providing regular blogs and content leading up to World Pool racedays in 2023, starting with the upcoming Saudi Cup meeting where all six Group races on Saturday will be commingled globally.

In a PR by World Pool, Dettori expressed his excitement about working with the organisation, which has expanded its presence to other countries and racetracks in 2023. “I’ve got a lot of different places to visit on my final year in the saddle,” he remarked. “From The Saudi Cup to Dubai and then onto all the major days in the UK and Ireland, it will hopefully be a very exciting season for all of us.”

Michael Fitzsimons, the Executive Director Wagering Products of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, expressed his enthusiasm about partnering with Frankie Dettori as a torchbearer for World Pool. “It’s a huge year for Frankie and it’s the same for World Pool after a record breaking 2022” he said. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with a global icon who has done so much for the sport of horse racing.”

Speaking of his expectations and winning odds, Dettori said “I’d love to win The Saudi Cup in my final year, and COUNTRY GRAMMER is a very solid contender. He never runs a bad race, has plenty of experience and proved he handles conditions when second last year. The Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup have always been his targets and he couldn’t have felt better when winning the San Antonio Stakes in December.”

World Pool in 2023

World Pool has expanded its global reach in 2023, beginning with the Lightning Stakes Day at Flemington in Australia last Saturday, which was the first Australian meeting to be included in World Pool. The upcoming Saudi Cup on Saturday will also be the first time World Pool will be in operation at Newbury Racecourse in the UK, with two races added to the World Pool season on Lockinge Stakes Day on May 20th.

Furthermore, World Pool is set to include Irish Derby Day among its 18 UK and Irish events on July 2nd, which will also feature the Deutsches Derby at Hamburg-Horn, marking the first World Pool race from Germany.

World Pool experienced record-breaking betting turnover in 2022, with HK$ 6 billion (approximately £622m or €725m) across the 21 commingled racedays, up from HK$ 4.8 billion (approximately £498m or €580m) in 2021. Derby Day at Epsom recorded the highest single day turnover of HK$ 66.1 million (approximately £6.8m or €8m).

Of note, the turnover is denominated in HK$, and the approximate values in pounds sterling and euro are calculated based on the current exchange rate.
