IBIA reports: Football, Esports and Tennis account for 75% of all suspicious betting activity worldwide

International Betting Integrity Association reported 64 alerts in Q121

IBIAIn a report published by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), it has been revealed that football, Esports and tennis accounted for majority of the integrity alerts during Q1 2021.

As previously reported on SiGMA News of the 64 alerts reported, 12 were from football, 17 from Esports and 18 from tennis. It has been pointed out that these figures are in line with recent quarters, with 61 integrity alerts reported in Q1 2020 and 68 alerts in Q4 2020. These three sports account for 75% of all suspicious betting activity worldwide.

Tennis remains the sport of most concern for the IBIA, with 18 betting alerts. Of these 18 alerts, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) were provided with six intelligence match reports, as they were not related the major international tennis tours. However, the players involved in the events have a possibility to be investigated by the Tennis Anti-Corruption Programme (TACP).

After the 3 mentioned sports, table tennis generated 7 integrity alerts, followed by basketball with 5 alerts and volleyball with 4. Only one alert was generated by horse racing.

“After a difficult 2020, many operators appear to be close to normality in terms of their pre-pandemic market offering,” IBIA chief executive Khalid Ali said. “This is reflected in the alert numbers and geographical spread for Q1, with a refocus on those sports that have traditionally and numerically dominated the betting offer globally, namely tennis and football.”

“The association and its members continue to work closely with those sports, and indeed all sports that wish to engage with us, to identify potential corruption and to seek robust sanctions to punish and deter such illicit activity.”

The International Betting Integrity Association leads the global voice for the licensed betting industry. Aside from protecting members from corrupt practices via monitoring programs on the betting platforms of its members, it also forms partnerships with gambling regulators to make use of its data to bring action against corrupt betting practices.
