Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Aman cracks down on illegal sports betting with over 150 arrests & RM115,000 in bets seized
Kuala Lumpur has seen over 150 people arrested with an estimated RM115,000 in sports betting wagers seized ever since the UEFA Euro Championships kicked off on June 10.
The seizures and arrests were all carried out by Bukit Aman after Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan planned an Ops Soga VIII from June 10 to July 13, throughout the EURO championships.
In a statement, Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan stated:
‘The main focus of the operations is to prevent and eradicate illegal betting for the championship. Between June 10 and June 21, we launched 107 raids and arrested 152 individuals.’
‘Our investigations revealed that the betting credit limit was also at RM11,645,227 based on individuals and syndicated betting records found.’
He also stated that together with the RM11,645,227 the Ops team also managed to seize:
- 24 computers
- 11 laptops
- one tablet
- 166 mobile phones
- 5 money counting machines
- 12 modems
- 8 routers
- 2 printers
- 155 SIM Cards
- 9 2020 UEFA European Championship Schedules
- 43 Books
- Sheets containing bets placed
There is still around 20 days left of the EURO championship so it is premature to consider the Ops Soga VIII as a success. However, it has certainly got off to the right start on its crackdown of illegal sports betting.
The Bukit Aman Anti Vice will continue to step up its efforts in the battle against illegal gambling.
