Land-based casinos in France hopeful of tax exemptions as new lockdown measures kick in

‘The total closure of casinos and gaming clubs only worsens the already very fragile situation’

Due to the fast growing rate of the pandemic, France announced new lockdown measures in many parts of the country. These measures are initially set for two weeks but curfews could last until December 1.

Many land-based casinos are awaiting the verdict of the State Council following an announcement from France’s Economy and Finance Minister, Bruno Le Maire, stating that companies affected by these curfews might be given tax exemptions.

Bruno Le Maire - Finance Summit 2021Le Maire also asked the banks to examine the postponement of the repayment of loans guaranteed by the State for all companies in difficulty, in particular in the hotel and restaurant sectors, events as well as sports.

“Everything that needs to be done will be done to help companies get through these weeks of curfew with the lowest possible economic impact,” he explained.

Finally, state guaranteed loans offered until December 31, 2020 will be extended for six months.

The Parisian casino or gambling club sector was not mentioned directly, although it has turned to the highest administrative body, challenging the second wave of closures. The association Casinos de France brings together 150 French casinos, out of the 202 in the sector.

Jean-François Cot, President of the union, said “The total closure of casinos and gaming clubs only worsens the already very fragile situation. It is obviously very damaging for national and local economies.”
