Macau reaches 2,000 tourists daily following quarantine relaxation

There is still a long road ahead for a full recovery level

Macau has been welcoming an average of 2,000 daily visitors after quarantine measures have been relaxed for visitors coming in from Mainland China’s province Guangdong. This was announced by Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes on Friday.

However, although the numbers show improvement in Macau’s tourism industry, Fernandes said that there is still a long road ahead for a full recovery similar to the tourism level before the pandemic.

Interview with Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of MGTO ...The Macau Statistics and Census Bureau also recorded only 16,133 visitors in May, while figures for June visitors are set to be released on 20 June.

On 15 June, quarantine measures were eased up for travelers from Macau to Guangdong.

Visitors coming in from Guangdong were not required to undergo quarantine when they enter Macau, however, returning back to the province would require that they undergo 14-day quarantine. This may have greatly affected visitations as numbers were only recorded in “hundreds” before the relaxation of quarantine arrangements for Macau and Guangdong.

Still, visitors in the state are required to submit a certificate stating that they have tested negative for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, or may take the test at the border gate.

Guests entering the casinos are required to take a body temperature check, and must complete a health assessment form certifying that they are in good health and have not been in contact with anyone ill.

Guangdong, being closest to Macau geographically, has over 113 million residents and has become the largest source of income for Macau’s casinos. Last year records show that 46 percent of visitors came from the province.
