Macau relaxes pandemic prevention measures in preparation for tourism boom during ‘Golden Week’

The SAR government in Macau is preparing to relax its COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures to attract more tourists for China’s National long holiday

The government in Macau believes that a large number of mainland tourists will visit Macau during the Golden Week holiday. If the situation in Macau does not change significantly thereafter, the Health Bureau will then comprehensively review all current epidemic prevention measures and consider relaxing the presentations under certain conditions.

Under current immigration restrictions, all foreign tourists and non-local employees are prohibited from entering Macau. However, the government recently confirmed that it will continue to hold the annual Macau Grand Prix in November, and foreign drivers cannot participate under the current policy.

Mainland China has resumed national approval for individual travel to Macau from September 23, while the nearest province Guangdong has resumed approval as early as August 26.

According to statistics from the Macau Public Security Police, between September 24 and 26, an average of 34,000 passengers entered and exited Macau every day, with 36,900 on September 25 last Friday.

Compared with last year’s daily average of 108,000 passengers, this is a significant decrease, but compared to July’s daily average of only 2,500 and August’s daily average of less than 8,000, a significant increase.

In addition, the Health Bureau stated that it will increase the number of daily nucleic acid tests to 19,000 in response to the long holiday.
