Macau reports highest number of visitors in 11 months

Macau starts the New Year with a bang after recording the highest number of visits in 11 months on 31 December 2020

macau casinoOn New Years Eve, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) reported the highest number of visitors in 11 months, standing at 30,747. In effect, the figure exceeded expectation! Additionally, Macau welcomed 27,755 visitors on Christmas day.

Sticking to typical trends, the majority of visitors entering Macau between the 31 December and 3 January came from China. It is also reported that the daily average across the period was 21,242; the majority coming from mainland China.

The figures instill a hope for a better year for the land-based gambling industry and all its businesses, as 2020 proved an unstable year due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

macau covid-19Despite the promising figures reported towards the end of the year, they are still far off from what they are forecasted to be. For instance, January 2020 saw an average of 92,000 daily visitors. In 2020, February saw a mere 5,585; the dichotomy a result of COVID-19. By May, the number had plummeted to a daily average of 520 visitors. The figures improved towards the second half of the year as China reduced travel restrictions.

Signing of 2020 was welcomed with open arms by hotels in particular who suffered greatly  as a result of the pandemic. The MGTO reported that the average occupancy rate stood at around 70%. Occupancy rate for all hotels in the city was reportedly 67.2% towards the end of the year.
