Macau targets 3 million international visitors in 2025

Macau is set to revive its international tourism sector in 2025, aiming to welcome 3 million overseas visitors, matching the 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), announced this goal on the first day of the Chinese New Year. The city saw nearly 2.5 million international visitors in 2024, exceeding the initial forecast of 2 million.

Overall, Macau recorded 34.93 million visitor arrivals in 2024, reflecting a 23.6 percent increase from the previous year. With continued growth, the SAR expects to surpass 38 million total tourist arrivals in 2025, approaching the 39.4 million visitors recorded in 2019.

Strategic campaigns to attract more tourists

The MGTO initiates targeted marketing campaigns to raise the global recognition of Macau. These projects will be delivered after the Chinese New Year while offering reduced rates for ferry as well as bus tickets. This will also support the tourism bureau in improving joint ventures with both airlines that work between Macau and Hong Kong, as well as major agencies that handle overseas travel.

Collaboration with airlines remains a crucial strategy, focusing on promotional campaigns, travel packages, and airfare discounts. By aligning with airline capacities and market demands, Macau aims to increase flight accessibility for international tourists.

Expanding presence in global markets

Macau has already initiated outreach efforts in Europe and plans to extend its promotional activities to the Middle East in February. A significant step in its global tourism drive will be participation in ITB Berlin, the world’s largest travel trade show, from 4 to 6 March.

To strengthen its presence in Asia, Macau will also organise roadshows in key markets later in the year. These efforts aim to highlight the city’s unique attractions, including its cultural heritage, entertainment hubs, and gaming industry.

Major events to boost Macau’s global tourism appeal

A number of high-profile events are slated to attract international arrivals to Macau in 2025. The Portuguese Association of Travel Agencies and Tourism will stage its congress in Macau at the end of 2025, further linking the destination with European markets.

Besides, the National Games in November will attract the sports tourists and concerts and large-size entertainment event to continue to occupy important positions in attraction of visitors. These factors combined with current attractions of Macau will be a strong reinforcement in recovery of the tourism sector.
