Macau Tourism Chief expects 4.1% visitor surge for May Day holiday

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), announced strong visitor projections during the opening ceremony of the 13th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo. Speaking on Friday, 27th April, Fernandes forecasted that Macau could welcome between 630,000 and 700,000 visitors during the five-day holiday period from 1st to 5th May.

Visitor numbers set to rise

Fernandes shared that the expected daily average of tourists could range between 127,000 and 140,000. The lower projection would reflect a 4.1 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. The higher estimate suggests a potential 15.7 percent rise, underlining the significance of the May Day holiday as one of Macau’s peak tourism seasons.

She highlighted that Macau’s preparations are in full swing to accommodate the anticipated surge. The tourism office is coordinating with different sectors to ensure smooth services and enhance the visitor experience during the holiday rush.

Hotel prices more competitive

A recent Morgan Stanley report shows that hotel prices in Macau are set to be softer during this year’s May Day holiday. According to the report, the average daily rates (ADR) for hotels are about 14 percent lower compared to the 2025 Chinese New Year period and around 2 percent below the rates recorded during the 2024 May Day holiday.

The more affordable hotel prices could further encourage last-minute bookings and longer stays, boosting tourism-related revenues across accommodation, retail, and entertainment sectors.

Strong tourism momentum

Macau’s tourism industry has been steadily gaining momentum throughout 2025, driven by increased visitor arrivals from mainland China and other key markets. The May Day holiday is traditionally a major travel period for mainland Chinese tourists, and Macau remains one of the top short-haul destinations.

The MGTO continues to promote a wide range of events and attractions to draw visitors, including cultural festivals, shopping promotions, and entertainment shows. Special transport arrangements and visitor services are also being enhanced to support the higher flow of tourists.

Outlook for the rest of 2025

With the strong start seen during earlier holiday periods this year, industry experts anticipate that Macau’s tourism sector will continue its recovery path through 2025. Strategic campaigns and favourable hotel pricing are expected to play key roles in sustaining visitor interest and lengthening stays in the region.

The 13th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo, where Fernandes shared the projections, runs until Sunday, 27th April, showcasing Macau’s growing tourism offerings and strengthening collaboration between local and international travel businesses.
