Macau’s GGR on the verge of recovery from pandemic plateau

Travel permission for Chinese mainlanders expected to keep boosting local GGR

As of April 2021, Macau’s GGR reached $1.05 billion (MOP 8.4 billion). This was following the lift of pandemic-related travel bans for residents of mainland China.

This number is the highest GGR since the beginning of the pandemic, a rise of 1% is recorded in comparison to the MOP8.31 billion in March.

AmbroseComparing the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, an increase of 3%, from MOP 31.24 billion to MOP32.04 billion was recorded.

The numbers are still 64% lower, then what they were in April before the pandemic hit. This shows the harsh impact the industry sustained due to the safety measures. The recent influx of tourists, amounting to 13,000 daily visitors during the Chinese New Year Golden Week shows that there’s room for the economic situation to improve.

The Labuor Day Golden Week, which started on May 1st and will end on May 5th, is expected to exceed this number, with approximately 40,000 daily visitors. Ambrose So Shu Fai, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of SJM Holdings Ltd, believes it will be possible to reach an average daily GGR of 400 million MOP during the Labour Holiday.

The post-pandemic recovery is still on its way even though numbers have yet to come close to pre-pandemic standards.
