March Madness anticipates wagers from over 47 million Americans

Online gaming platforms set for a mad rush when the NCAA basketball tournament kicks off

March Madness 2021, the NCAA single elimination basketball tournament, will see over 47 million Americans bet on the whole tournament, according to a survey held by the American Gaming Association.

The number of punters is expected to aid the growth of retail and online sports books, anticipating a meteoric rise when compared to 2019.

Online betting is again the winner here as 17.8 million are expected to utilise online platforms while 8.3 million look to place their bets via retail sports books, representing a rise of 206% and 79% respectively when comparing the figures to 2019.

AGA President and CEO Bill Miller highlighted the change anticipated for this year:

Bill Miller CEO AGA - SiGMA News

The sports betting landscape has changed dramatically since 2019 – and as a result, tournament betting has transformed. As consumers formerly limited to bracket contests now enjoy access to legal sports book options, they also plan to place traditional sports bets as March Madness returns.

In addition to the online and retail numbers, the survey also found that 30.6 million Americans will place more traditional bets on March Madness 2021, up from 17.8 million in 2019.

March Madness is a very popular event in the US and interest for the tournament has certainly rised.

  • 26% stated that they are extremely interested and following the tournament with a close eye (in 2019 this number was 23%)
  • 42% followed college basketball more closely this season
  • 70% confirmed that their increased attention is due to the availability of legal sports betting

CEO Bill Miller added:

With more legal, regulated sports betting options than ever before, millions of customers now have safer ways to enjoy all the fun and suspense only March Madness provides.

March Madness 2021 is the first NCAA tournament in 26 years that top Universities, Duke and Kentucky, will not be participating. Therefore, Gonzaga University is the new public’s favourite followed by Florida State University and Baylor University.
