Mohegan Gaming offers €150m for Greek casino licence

Mohegan said it stands ready to start construction once it wins the tender and plans to have the casino open by 2024

On Wednesday, the Greek Minister announced that the U.S. tribal casino operator Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment and its partner, the Greek construction giant, Gek Terna have offered 150 million euros ($176 million) for the 30-year licence needed to build and operate a Greek integrated casino resort in Athens.

Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis told a Greek TV station: “The tender had set a minimum price of €30m. Mohegan offered a lump sum of €150m.” The consortium offer was five times the minimum price that Hellenic Gaming Commission had set for this process.

mohegan gamingMohegan Gaming is the sole bidder in the tender process to build a 120 table and 1,200 slot casino resort on the site of the former Athens airport in Hellinikon on the southern coast at Elliniko – part of an 8-billion-euro redevelopment plan overseen by Greek developer Lamda.

Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment’s Chairman and CEO, Mario Kontomerkos, said upon winning the tender“We understood that INSPIRE Athens was meant to symbolise more than an integrated resort,”

“It is our hope that INSPIRE Athens would be the catalyst that sparks the entire development of the Hellinikon area into the coveted Athenian Riviera, forever redefining the modern identity of Greece.” He added.

The next steps in the tender process will see the contracts signed and then approvals from Greek auditors and parliament before the Mohegan-led consortium is declared winner of the tender.

Mohegan said it stands ready to start construction once it wins the tender and plans to have the casino open by 2024. The resort will consist of a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, convention center, shopping, dining, casino, and a comprehensive mix of premium amenities. Moreover, it is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of tourists and generate more than 7,000 jobs.

The iconic design of the building was created by Steelman Partners, an international architectural firm specialising in IRC design and development. The concept form draws inspiration from the architectural history of Greece, particularly from Athenian sculptures and buildings including the Acropolis and the Caryatids.
