MSI 2021 Group Stage results and Rumble Preview

Which six teams made it out to the Rumble Stage?

League of Legends esports is full of excitement as the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2021 continues with the best teams fighting in Groups for the international title. So far, the MSI 2021 Group Stage has been fierce but only six teams made it out to the Rumble Stage.

MSI 2021 Group Stage

esports -1Beginning on May 6, teams got seeded into three different groups for best-of-one matches. From there, teams played in a double round-robin format or a quadruple round-robin for Group A. Now, at the end of the MSI 2021 Group Stage, the top two League of Legends esports teams from each group move forward to the Rumble Stage.

Group A only housed three teams, Royal Never Give Up, Pentanet.GG, and Unicorns of Love. RNG represents China and the LPL and found an easy time here, winning every single game.

LEC Champion MAD Lions saw closer fights in Group B, especially against the two underdogs, Brazil’s paiN Gaming and Turkey’s İstanbul Wild Cats. Taiwanese team PSG Talon also competed in Group B and ended up dominating, only losing to MAD Lions.

Cloud9 won the LCS Mid-Season Showdown but Luka “Perkz” Perković and the team arrived at MSI 2021 Groups in very poor form. Finally, after losing to Latin American Gillette Infinity and Japanese DetonatioN FocusMe, C9 turned around and won every game after. This group saw the most action of them all with every team seeing a solid chance at progressing. Worlds 2020 Champion DAMWON Gaming KIA and Korea’s representative came out on top, only losing once to Cloud9.

Rumble Stage

The League of Legends esports teams proceeding to MSI’s 2021 Rumble Stage and the Groups standings are as follows:

Cloud9 (4-2)
DAMWON Gaming KIA (5-1)
MAD Lions (5-1)
Pentanet.GG (2-6)
PSG Talon (4-2)
Royal Never Give Up (8-0)

From May 14 to May 18, the Rumble Stage brings these six teams together in multiple best-of-one games. Though 12 teams initially qualified for the international event, Vietnamese team GAM Esports couldn’t attend, changing the tournament format. While this made things a little easier for Group A, things are back to normal after that.

Based on standings at MSI 2021, it’s difficult to tell which teams will move to the playoffs. RNG, MAD, and DK represent the world’s top League of Legends esports regions and are doing the same here. The best from the LPL, LEC, and LCK will likely make it through. The fourth team will be a surprise with fans rooting for LCS representative Cloud9 to break the North American curse, though PSG Talon won’t make it easy.

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is one of two major international events for 2021 esports with Worlds being the other. Now that Groups has ended and the Rumble Stage begins, fans can’t wait to see the next level of competition at MSI 2021.
