“Identity as a whole has obviously developed at a very high speed,” Roger stated, summing up the rapid technological advancements that are transforming how businesses verify customer identities. Gone are the days when a simple data check against credit agencies sufficed. Roger reflected on how far we’ve come, noting, “Back in the day, it was only like ten years ago where people would do data checks in the background.” Today’s regulations require companies to gather comprehensive documentation. “Now we’re talking about having to provide documents such as your passport, driving licences, ID cards, and proof of address,” he explained, highlighting the increasing intricacy of the verification process.
Introducing biometric verification marks a significant advancement in the industry. “In Germany, it’s a must-have for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance,” Roger noted. This technology not only bolsters security but also plays a crucial role in identifying underage gamblers. He highlighted a startling statistic: “During the opening game of the 2024 Euro’s football tournament, we caught over 1,000 underage attempts to open accounts.” Such figures illustrate the effectiveness of biometric checks in upholding the integrity of the sector.

Roger explained, “You know, someone sets the bar here, and then someone else sets the bar there,” referring to the inconsistent requirements that complicate compliance efforts. Staying updated on these regulations is crucial for companies operating in multiple markets. “For us as a company, it’s getting easier now because we’ve seen so many different use cases,” Roger noted.

It is crucial for the industry to work towards increased collaboration among regulators, operators, and technology providers. “I wish there was more dedication to understanding what technology can provide and what’s possible and what’s not possible,” Roger suggested. He felt this proactive approach could lead to more informed decision-making and better alignment between regulations and industry capabilities. Roger stressed that having informed discussions would help align regulatory frameworks with industry capabilities, ultimately leading to better outcomes for all parties involved.

Roger highlighted that, while biometric verification is an effective tool for mitigating underage gambling, we should not view it as an all-encompassing solution. He pointed out it is vital to ensure that such measures do not unjustly penalise responsible players, advocating for a balanced approach that safeguards player privacy while upholding compliance and safety standards.

He noted that as compliance evolves, operators increasingly view it as an enabler rather than a burden. “When companies can provide a safe environment for players, they foster loyalty and trust,” he stated, highlighting the positive implications of effective compliance.
As technology continues to advance, operators must remain agile. “We could have this discussion a year from now and everything might have changed,” Roger noted. The pace of technological development is staggering, and companies must be ready to adapt to new solutions that emerge.
