Philippines’ NCAA kicks off historic 100th season

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) of the Philippines is set to open its 100th season on September 7, marking a milestone in its rich history. The opening ceremony will reflect on the association’s legacy, highlighting the journey of its athletes and institutions over the past century.

With the theme “Siglo Uno: Inspiring Legacies,” this season aims to celebrate the NCAA’s contributions to Philippine sports while uniting its member schools under a shared commitment to excellence.

LPU to host the event

This year’s host, Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), will organise its first-ever NCAA event. According to Hercules Callanta, NCAA Season 100 Management Committee Chairman, the opening ceremony will emphasise the league’s 100-year history, showcasing its enduring legacy.

Callanta mentioned the pressure of hosting this monumental event but reassured fans that LPU had prepared a thrilling and memorable experience. Additionally, the event will feature performances from popular local artists, including Justin De Dios of SB19 and P-pop group G22.

San Beda ready to defend title amid tough competition

San Beda University is determined to defend its NCAA men’s basketball title as the centennial season gets underway. After defeating Mapua University last season, the Red Lions face heightened competition with several teams, including the Cardinals, College of St. Benilde, and Emilio Aguinaldo College, reinforcing their rosters.

Head coach Yuri Escueta acknowledged the challenge, explaining that defending the title is never easy, especially with San Beda’s long-standing target on their backs. He emphasised that while the team is confident, they must remain prepared for tough competition from rivals eager to dethrone them. Escueta is relying on key players such as James Payosing, Yuki Andrada, and Jommel Puno to step up, particularly in leadership roles, following the departure of stars like Jacob Cortez and Peter Alfaro.

The team has spent nearly a year preparing for the new season, and Escueta expressed his trust in the new lineup’s ability to blend with the returning players. The Red Lions are set to face LPU after the opening ceremony.

Opening ceremony honors all NCAA sports

Beyond basketball, the NCAA Season 100 opening ceremony will showcase the wide range of sports within the league, with all athletic programs represented during the parade of athletes. The ceremony seeks to spotlight the diversity of talents across various sports, furthering the NCAA’s mission to promote all its athletic programs.
