New lease of life for Macau’s casino industry as borders reopen for foreigners

The country has also announced a fresh new economic-stimulus package of $55m directed towards tourism to help the recovery process

An Executive Order No. 43/2021, which came into effective as of midnight on Tuesday will see Macau allowing foreigners to enter the Special Administrative Region.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, all borders have been closed in Macau except for children or spouses of residents in Macau, students registered in schools or universities there, those doing business in the country and individuals who are deemed to serve a public interest i.e emergency or disease control.

Wynn MacauThe only way Foreigners will be allowed into Macau is via mainland China only and provided they hold a mainland China visa issued by the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR.

Other requirements include foreigners return to Macau within the visa’s validity period. Macau’s tourism notice states that:

  • Visitors are prohibited from entering Macao if they have visited a foreign country 21 days prior to arriving in Macao.
  • If they have visited Hong Kong 21 days prior to arriving in Macao, they must hold a certificate of negative result for COVID-19 nucleic acid test performed within the past 24 hours and will need to go to designated places for a 21-day medical observation and observe self-health management measures for at least 7 days.
  • If they have visited Taiwan 14 days prior to arriving in Macao, they must hold a certificate of negative result for COVID-19 nucleic acid test issued within the past 7 days and will need to go to designated places for a 14-day medical observation.
  • If they have visited Mainland China 14 days prior to arriving in Macao, they must hold a certificate of negative result or a certificate of specimen collection for COVID-19 nucleic acid test issued within the past 7 days.

On Monday Macau also announced a fresh new economic-stimulus package of $55m directed towards tourism. This is aimed to boost the decline in spending on Macau’s tourism industry as well as the casino industry.
